From the 15th to the 17th of june, the Cabarete Kitesurf Open and Dominican Championships took place at Cabaretes Kite Beach. 39 local kiteboarders inscribed for the competition. In the single elimination on Friday, Alex Soto (Cabrinha, Cabarete Kiteboards, Dare2Fly) secured his top position with a strong overall performance. Waiting in the next positions were Melvin de Leon (Best), Raoul Urban (Kitexcite) and Yan Carlos Paulino(Best). On Saturday morning, the conditions looked promising and the riders got their gear ready after the skippers meeting at 11 am. In the end, it took the wind two more hours to be finally strong enough to start double elimination. The competition started off slow with some riders being hung over or giving up before the heats even started. The gusty winds and choppy water didn’t make it easy on the riders, but they showed that they are able to handle pressure and difficult conditions. In the round of the last 16 riders, the level increased significant and the atmosphere started to heat up.
Strongest riders in the double elimination were Kelvin Corniel (Kiteclub), Brian de Leon (Takoon), Luis Miguel Martinez (Airrush, Ufo, Dare2Fly) and Ariel Corniel (EH). Martinez and A. Corniel were the two riders meeting up with Fridays best seated four Urban, Paulino, de Leon and Soto. Specially the small Ariel Corniel was on fire. He had an incredible arsenal of handle pass maneuvers, landing one trick after another.
Martinez was riding super well, landing KGB’s, a Flat 3 and a Handlepass to blind, but it was not enough to stop little Ariel on his march forward to meet the top four. Ariel seemed handeling the difficult conditions (gusty winds) without any difficulties, landing all tricks (Mobes, 313, Slimchances, huge Kiteloops, Blindjudge and his signature move Double S-Bend to blind) on both tacks.
