FOSTER CITY — Vans and trucks and SUVs jammed the Third Avenue parking lot Friday afternoon, disgorging wetsuits, boards, and bat-shaped kites the size of prehistoric birds.
High above the Bay, planes lumbered toward San Francisco International Airport. Below, shimmying above the water, swirled some 30 kites. They were violet, yellow, black, electric orange. Even farther below, suspended by strings, wetsuited kiteboarders skated across the water. They cruised as fast as 25 miles per hour, and every now and again one of them soared from the water and floated.
The kiteboarders say it's like finding religion. Theysay you become one with the ocean and the sky and the wind, and they say it with the convert's zeal."
