Cabrinha Race Series - Race #4

Kafka Captures Top Spot

WOW! Race night #4 was spectacular. Twenty one racers waited to the very last minute to determine the appropriate size kite to rig; most chose 9s and 10s. The enthusiasm was high as this was the conclusion of the Cabrinha Mini Series #1 and the top three winners would be determined tonight. The “mini series #1” is based on the first four race nights with one throw out. The first race was held in winds ranging from 23-32, averaging 27 on an eb tide. By the third race the winds had subsided a bit to 18-29 averaging 22 and a flood.
Image

Once again, Cabrinha’s Jeff Kafka took the top honors for the evening with a total of 4 points (1,2,1). Jeff rode his 9M XB2 and his 5’6” Prisoner of Wind Race Quad. Chip Wasson (Ozone) rode his 10.5M Sport and his Carafino foil board to a second for the evening with 5 points (2,1,2), while Anthony Chavez (Naish) rode his 10M Torch and his 2006 Chavez custom to a strong third with 9 points (3,3,3)

In the first race, Kafka took a quick lead, was first to the windward mark, and built a commanding lead to the finish. He remains the fastest of the racers downwind, while Chip is emerging as being able to point the highest upwind. Chip and Anthony battled it out around the course with Wasson getting the better of Chavez on the last upwind leg.
Image

In the second race, both Chip and Anthony bettered Kafka to the windward mark and by a substantial distance. Kafka then proceeded to blow by Chip and Anthony on the downwind leg, with Chip being able to recaptured the lead on the last upwind leg.
Image

In the third race, it was Kafka and Anthony that battled from the start and were neck and neck on both the upwind and downwind legs with Anthony having about a 10 yard lead at the leeward mark. Anthony fell rounding the mark and knowing he wasn’t going to catch Kafka by following him on the port tack towards the middle of the Bay, decided to try a starboard tack back towards the Yacht Club. Well, the tactic didn’t pay off. Not only didn’t he catch Kafka, but Chip managed to sneak by him as well.
Image

The evening the racing was fierce. Kafka, Chip, and Anthony battled all evening for the top three spots, while a second group of racers; Chris Brown (17 pts), Gabe Brown (21 pts), Geoff Headington (23 pts), Eric Due (24 pts), Ovi Banuto (24 pts), Kris Youngblood 25 pts, and Stefaans Viljoens (26 pts), battled it out for spots 4,through10. Like I said earlier….the racing was spectacular!!!!!! And in case you were wondering, Shawn Richman who entered the evening in second overall was ill and couldn’t make it down from Oregon, while Mark Bosta entered the night 6th overall was completing his race committee responsibilities.
Image

With tonights racing “on the books,” Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha) emerged and the winner of the Cabrinha Mini Series #1 with 3 points (1,1,1), Chip Wasson (Ozone) with his best performance of the season moved from 4th to 2nd with 11 points (5,4,2), and Chris Brown (SS) finished 3rd with 12 points (4,4,4). These three are also the leaders for the overall Cabrinha Race Series (in the same order), followed closely by Viljoens, Headington, Bosta, and Chavez.
Image

After racing we conducted the free raffle of Ts and hats from our sponsors and presented the awards from Cabrinha for the Cabrinha Mini Series #1.

Cabrinha Race Series - the big boys come out to play

Kafka Dominates in Light Air

Cabrinha’s Jeff Kafka kited to three bullets against 21 racers in 14-15mph winds and a pretty decent flood by the middle of the second race. Anthony Chavez, last years winner did not race as he was fulfilling his race committee responsibilities. Geoff Headington, the 2006 runner up was out of town and also did not race.

Jeff Kafka rode his Cabrinha 14 Contra and his 5’6” Prisoner of Wind Race Quad to three firsts and 3 points for the overall win. The surprise of the evening were the much improved Marcelo Segura (RRD) and Mark Bosta (Naish). Marcello was second with 7 points (3,2,2) and Bosta third with 12 points (4,5,3) Both rode their 14m kites.

Marcello and Mark were 8th and 7th respectively in the first night of racing. Jeff Ruoss unveiled his “secret race board” with not a lot of fanfare. He finished tied for 4th with 13 points (5,4,4). About the same as he did in the 2006 series. His new board is a twin tip with two 2 1/2” fins, (one on each end in the center) and with a retractable centerboard. Chip continued to dial in his foil board and tied for 4th with 13 points (2,3,. To this observer, both of these boards seem to go to weather at a steeper angle than the other racers.

Watch out for both of these guys. In the first race, Chip was sailing at a much steeper angle than the other racers, and was first to the weather mark. However, Kafka was much faster off the wind and was first to the leeward mark and finish by a substantial distance. In the second race, Kafka, Chip and Bosta all started on a port tack at the pin end of the start line while the rest of the fleet started on starboard at the committee boat end of the line. Kafka was able to maintain his tack staying clear of the fleet and with a commanding lead. Chip needed to yield way and went into the water while Bosta needed to weave his way thru the fleet loosing some valuable ground.

Both recovered nicely to finish 2nd and fifth respectively.. In the third race, both Marcelo and Bosta were first to the weather mark, but Kafka caught them on the downwind leg in front of the Yacht Club and continued to pull away to the finish. Photo by Paul Buelow The 2007 Cabrinha Race Series thru 2 nights of racing has seen a very competitive fleet with the usual suspects near the top ( Anthony, Kafka, Chip, Jeff R, Geoff H, Steve G) joined by some newer faces near the top (Stefaans, Marcelo, Bosta, Chris B). When writing up the results of race night #1, I had an oversight that I would like to correct. Chris Brown(SS) finished 4th overall with 22 points (8,3,4,7). This was significant as two Pro guests, Cabrinha’s Richman brothers finished 2, and 3rd, and the fact that this was Chris’ “rookie” race night. As Chris has been a regular on the local kiteboarding scene,

I did not equate Chris with being a “rookie. Job well done! How did I realize this oversight? Well, Chris pointed it out to me at the bar :-). Join us for the next race on June 14. Cabrinha Race Series Results - Race 1

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

It Blows for the 2007 Cabrinha Race Series

After having the first two race evenings canceled due to poor conditions, the third time was the charm. Crissy Field greeted the racers with 20-35 miles per
hour wind and with up to 5ft swell rolling through the Gate. Standing on the beach and deciding what kite to rig turned out to be a difficult but critical call . Racers were rigging from 6 meters to 13 meters, with most finally deciding on 7-10m kites.

The conditions were extreme even for Crissy. The swell and the strong wind made for a very tough racing. The starts were just as difficult as the conditions, as half the fleet started on starboard while the other half on port.

There were four races with 32 riders, and for the first time a triangle course was introduced (windward, reaching, leeward). Last years champion, Anthony Chavez (Naish) and Cabrinha’s Jeff Kafka resumed their 2006 battle by leading the pack in the first 2 races but were DSQ’d as they rounded the wrong reaching mark which put them out of contention for the evening. Incidentally, Kafka finished with a first in races 3 and 4 with Chavez a 2 and 3, putting them in 10th place and 12th place at the end of the day. With them out of the way, the battle was for the first three places was between Cabrinha’s Richman brothers and local Stefaans Viljoen (SS). In the end, Viljoen came out on top with 13 pts (3,2,3,5). Jesse Richman finished 2nd with 14 pts (1,1,10, 2) and Shawn Richman 3rd with 20 pts (2,9,5,4).

Another highlight of the evening, Chip Wasson introduced a foil board to closed course kite racing. Chip finished a respectable 5th. In talking with Chip he indicated that he is using a smaller foil and shorter shaft than normal, and kite size is critical. He used an 11m which was too much power for the board and kept driving the board into the water loosing the advantage of the foil. Chip indicated he should have gone with the 7m which he had also rigged.

The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Ozone Travel, Adventure Sports Miami, and Adventure Sports, Inc., and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Dual Kite Action: Ze Germans Go Wild

Google Translated:

The Özi Hubert (approx. 90kg/190cm) made it for us forwards. The wind schwächelte this day to the Kitestation Peter Müller in the Soma Bay. There also the largest Kites (21 m/2) did not help to slip over reasonably into to come. Thus he tinkered himself a mega+ Kite monster together. To its bar with 25m linen length it hung its Slingshot Fuel 17m/2. With 6m linen extensions it attached behind it its Airrush 21 m/2. 38m/2 at the Trapetzhacken! Afterwards it instructed two aids like the Kite to start and lands would be. I boat it my Door (there approx. 5-6kn and 38°C hot air have as well known no pressure), but he took its board on to 145 he, since the smaller board would be sufficient. Actually it had powerful course and was approx. one hour on the open sea kiten!!!!
As it back was boat it on the other present Kitern to fly the monster also times. None dared however (with Wässerung 100%tig not restartable! ). It was probably already repeatedly on Austrias lakes with the monster on the way. COURAGEOUSLY COURAGEOUSLY Hubert! A p r i l 2 0 0 7 Century weather in April gives many sun and summer temperatures to us and K E I N E N W I N D! With us 8 was announced it kn and ballerte then nevertheless only with 4-5 kn. Geierkiter could do only phasenweise with the 17er versus and the door in slips to come, without being able to hold the height. If nothing more goes, then must be gone more radical ways, Thus inflated I mean 16 CB and the 12CB and hung both Kites to my 9 it omega bar. The linen have after 20m a tying possibility.

To the original extension of 5m the CB16 was hung, among them the 12CB. Geierkiter made itself available as a test driver without however for any damage to be responsible to want, loosely baumeln persisted nevertheless on the starting attempt. Highly with the bird! The 28 m/2 Bowkonstruktion with the klassichen Russian start started. Courageously, courageously Geierkiter! But a baking LINE of the 16erCB unfortunately did not impose itself to 12 CB and the kit construction in was correctly controllable therefore. Thus again down. By the short linen construction the 12 CB and the 16CB linen was unfortunately somewhat too broad could impose itself in the ears. Thus, then evenly changes on 25 m/2 Bowminimonster. Instead of the 12CB I hung then the 9CB purely. Starting attempt and ......? It functions! The Monsterkite is controllable, depowerbar and has more pressure than the 17 it versus! Thus in the future kiten starting from 4kn! Hubert, hereby I provoke you to the ultimative low wind race duel. Mega C Monsterkite against mega Bow Monsterkit

Cabrinha 2007 board range

Cabrinha 2007 board range

We're in the board game now and we’re backing it up with light weight, solid performers. As the leader in kitesurfing technologies and manufacturing, we are committed to providing the same high level of design and quality for our boards as our kite customers have enjoyed for years. This season we have completely revamped our board program. Using a state of the art manufacturing facility, the highest quality materials, and proven technologies, we present 3 new board models.

Prodigy (freestyle/freeride)
Image
Sizes: 148x39 / 158x41

The Prodigy is the easiest way to get yourself up and riding with the least amount of effort. The Prodigy 48 and 58 is designed to provide a stable platform with fantastic edging capabilities. Built with an ABS sidewall and polyurethane core construction, it is made to withstand the type of abuse that a first time board usually is given. Prodigy comes with our custom cut, moderate density footpad and widebody adjustable footstraps, four G10 fins (50mm), and a handle.

Imperial (performance freestyle/freeride)
Image
Sizes: 123x36 / 128x37 / 133x38 / 138x39

The Cabrinha Imperial is a board that likes to be ridden hard and fast. The outline, which is narrower than our Custom model, is made to handle high speeds through rough or choppy water. For freestyle or freeriding, you’ll have the confidence to take off or land your trick anywhere... in control. With a size range of 123cm all the way up to 138cm, there is a board in the range to fit riders of all sizes. The imperial is also built with an ABS sidewall construction and PVC core. A biax/quadrax glass lay-up provides a forgiving flex and comfortable ride. The Imperial comes standard with multi-density footpads, Wide-body adjustable footstraps, handle, and four G-10 fins (50mm).

Custom (wakestyle/freeride)
Image
Sizes: 128x38 / 133x39 / 138x41.5

The Custom model retains its dedicated Wakestyle/Freeride design elements. The Custom is a performance model with excellent pop. It is the board of choice for riders like Andre Phillip. Its wider plan-form and progressive rocker give the board a solid feel for Wakestyle riding. This entirely new construction technique features an ABS sidewall, a PVC core, and mixed weight quadraxial glass to keep the durability high and the weights low. The new Custom comes standard with multi-density footpads, Wide-body adjustable footstraps, handle, and four G-10 fins (50mm).

Kiteboarding World Cup 2006

Day 5 - Iles de la Madeleine Kiteboarding World Cup 2006,

Day five of the Iles de la Madeleine Kiteboarding World Cup 2006 got off to a promising start at 8am with riders taking to the water for continued action of kite course racing. Temperatures were higher, the sun was steady and the winds were onshore from 8-12 knots. The course, set in a triangle design, was reset from the night before as competitors warmed up on the water. Unfortunately, when all was ready to start the wind had dropped to 10 knots or lower and the official race was put on hold.

http://costaricakiteboarding.com/pics/kiteboarding_jump.jpg

After lunch and more volleyball, at 1pm another course race was attempted. Smaller, lighter riders such as Madison Van Heurck, Jesse Richman and Shawn Richman were able to make a run of the course, while others attempted for fun and to show off for the crowd but were unable to make all the marks and the finish line, getting drawn downwind. Everyone enjoyed the nice weather catching up on rest and tans as well as small sessions on the water including Bruna Kajiya, Kristin Boese and Ania Grzelinska. By 4 pm everyone was off the water and the event was called for the day.

The goal of this first annual Kite Course Championships, hosted by the Professional Kite Riders Association (PKRA) in association with Caribbean Winds, and Cabrinha is to help firmly establish this relatively new discipline through the assistance and guidance of the kite course pioneers at the St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco, USA, by establishing a standardized set of course racing rules that can be applied in all parts of the world. Two representatives from the St. Francis Yacht Club are present at this event and have been instrumental in helping set the courses and educating the riders on the rules of course racing. The hope is that this will provide incentive for many other kite course racing competitions to be held at various local and national levels throughout the year culminating in the Worlds once a year. Of course the ultimate goal is the eventual acceptance of kite course racing into the Olympics.

This evening is a free night for all the competitors. Forecasts look promising for tomorrow with increased wind in the afternoon and a goal of 13-15 knots for course racing to continue. Skippers meeting scheduled for 9:30am.

August 3rd, 2006

2006 Fuerteventura World Cup – Day 2

Fuerteventura PKRA Kiteboarding Grand Prix 2006

Competitors and spectators were greeted to more incredible wind and clear skies in Fuerteventura for the second day of the PKRA Grand Prix 2006. The riders rigged up their smaller kites to handle the gusty 25 to 30 knots of wind and PKRA officials continued to run two man heats instead of four for safety reasons as well as ease of judging. The first riders took to the water around 11 am for the continuation of the single elimination tournament, which was successfully completed by 4 pm. Conditions were challenging for the competitors as the waves continued to grow in size throughout the afternoon, nonetheless they persevered, striving for the goal of close to $50,000 USD in prize money.

pkrafuerte1

In the first heat of the day, Mallory De la Villemarqué (North, France) landed a technical frontside 3 against Youri Zoon (Slingshot, Netherlands), however, he did not exhibit enough variety and power to secure a spot in the next round. Best team members, Alvaro Onieva (Spain) and Bas Koole (Netherlands) ripped up the water next. Alvaro displayed his usual bag full of tricks including a blind judge, a back to blind, a raley to blind, a hasselhoff, a double front to blind, and a mobe to advance against his teammate, Bas. Cesar Portas (North, Spain) and Philipp Brückmann (Carved, Germany) followed, with Cesar nailing a powerful mobe to downloop and a blind judge to stay in the tournament before meeting up with Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) in the third round.

pkrafuerte2
In arguably the best seven minutes of kiteboarding for the day, Ruben Lenten (Slingshot, Netherlands) and cousin, Kevin Langeree were on fire, shooting off trick after trick, getting the crowd cheering. Kevin nailed a sweet frontside 3, a handlepass, an amazing mobe 5, a KGB, and a hasselhoff, while Ruben answered back by going big with an F16 grab and a kung fu. Ultimately, in a close judge’s decision, Kevin secured the win, advancing to the next round. Following the pair of Dutch cousins were Cabrinha team members Alberto Rondina (Italy) and Petr Tyushkevich (Russian Federation) in yet another exceptionally close heat. Alberto pulled off a nice slim, front to blind, and a backside 3, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Petr’s arsenal of tricks such as a fat chance, 3-1-3, raley to blind, slim, and a frontside 3.

pkrafuerte3

Rui Meira (Naish, Portugal) and Randy Hereman (F-One, Netherlands) battled it out in another close match, but Randy was on a mission, sticking a blind judge, a powerful mobe 5, and a kiteloop to move ahead into the next round of the single elimination tournament where he would meet up with PKRA points leader, Aaron Hadlow. Finishing up round two, Mikael Blomvall (JN Kites, Sweden) landed a nice blind judge, mobe, and slim to take out Lorenzo Giovanneli (Slingshot, Italy), while Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, UK) moved past Erik Volpe (Italy) with an aerial back to blind and a sick kiteloop handlepass

pkrafuerte4

Third round action pitted Youri Zoon against Alvaro Onieva in a close heat, however, Youri was unstoppable, displaying tons of power and energy to earn his place in the semifinals. Kevin Langeree faced Cesar Portas in a heat where variety ended up being the key for success. Although Cesar nailed a strong mobe, blind judge and an aerial back to blind, Kevin was on like crazy glue, sticking an F16, a 3-1-3, a frontside 3, mobe to wrapped, KGB, and a hasselhoff to move on to meet fellow Nethlerlander, Zoon in the next round. Petr Tyushkevich, also showed off a variety of powerful tricks, blasting a sick fat chance, slim chance, and blind judge to advance against Mikael Blomvall, who rallied valiantly with an aerial back to blind and double S bend. Next out of the gate were Randy Hereman and Aaron Hadlow, both going for it and giving the beach plenty to cheer about. Randy landed a powerful raley to blind and super powered kiteloop, however, Aaron continued to impress the judges with his variety and clean, technical moves giving him the edge over Hereman.

The beach was in a frenzy for the semifinals with the intense action on the water. Aaron Hadlow and Petr Tyushkevich both were charging, using the waves and trying to outdo each other. Aaron ended up the victor based on variety and power of his tricks, even giving the crowd a show with a huge, high kiteloop close to the beach. Also in the semifinals, fellow Dutchmen, Kevin Langeree and Youri Zoon put on an amazing display of moves, each rider wanting a spot in the finals versus Hadlow. Youri stuck a mega kiteloop, a kung fu 3, and a technical front mobe, but it wasn’t enough to stop the energy-filled Kevin from advancing with a powerful frontside 3, KGB, and difficult mobe 5.

The close competition continued in the loser’s final where Youri squared off against Petr. Youri banged out a huge F16, front mobe, handlepass with a 360, and a quality blind judge 3 to secure him third place overall. The men’s single elimination finals once again paired rivals Kevin Langeree and Aaron Hadlow in a nailbiting showdown. Kevin, eager for another win, was ripping, landing a frontside 3, a sick hasselhoff, and an aerial back to blind, but it was not quite enough to edge out Aaron, who was determined to take first, nailing an F16, an aerial back to blind, and a massive kiteloop. Kevin will have a chance to seize the top spot in the tournament during the double eliminations, which begin tomorrow.

pkrafuerte5

First up for the women were Angela Peral (North, Spain) and Karolina Winkowska (Naish, Poland). Karolina dominated the heat with lots of variety, such as a kung fu, big air jumps with grabs, and riding to blind. The next heat featured Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) versus Wiktoria Boszko (North, Poland) in an incredibly close bout. Ania blasted off a kiteloop, a front, a back, and a raley, but North teammate, Wiktoria, edged past her with a nice back roll, krypt, and a very technical raley to blind with surface handlepass. Jo Wilson (Naish, UK) then faced off against Pauline Boussard (Wipika, France). Jo tore up the water, getting lots of air with grabs and showing off a variety of powered tricks, meanwhile, Pauline landed front and back rolls, and a one foot jump, but it wasn’t enough to prevail against the determined Brit.

In one of the most exciting heats of the day, World Champion Kristin Boese (Best, Germany) faced Gisela Pulido (Airush, Spain). Both nailed technical handlepasses, though Kristin pulled out the victory with more unhooked tricks, like the back to wrapped and the raley to blind, to move on to the semifinals. In the women’s semifinals, Wiktoria Boszko was overpowered in the strong winds, which allowed Karolina Winkowska to advance with a front to blind, a krypt, a surface pass, and a kung fu. The superstar performer of the day, Jo Wilson, continued her charge, landing a front spin with a grab, a sick raley, an indy, a krypt, and a front to toeside, for the upset over Kristin Boese, to advance to the finals.

pkrafuerte6

The loser’s final featured Kristin versus Wiktoria Boszko. Kristin was charging with a perfectly executed front roll with a grab, a raley, an unhooked double front, and a krypt, securing third place in the women’s single elimination tournament. The women’s final between Jo Wilson and Karolina Winkowska was action packed. Karolina stuck a variety of tricks, including a kung fu and a krypt, but it wasn’t enough to stop Jo Wilson from taking first place with her big air grabs and powered moves. Kristin, Wiktoria and Karolina will have a second chance in the double elimination tournament starting tomorrow to continue their quest for the top position overall.

The Speed Grand Prix event has been extremely challenging so far with sideshore winds and large waves to contend against. The morning runs, when the water is a bit flatter, have proven better for results, with speeds hitting the 40 knot mark. Currently Christophe Prin-Guenon (Naish, France) is in first place for the men with 1.4 total points and a top speed of 40.75 knots - only .04 knots away from the world record! Charlotte Consorti (France, F-One) is in the number one position for the women with 2.7 points overall and a top speed of 29.55 knots. Many riders have been experiencing extreme crashes and suffering broken bones as a result. Yesterday, speed rider John Grimm (Best, US) was taken to the hospital after a wipe out left him with two broken ribs, but today he was seen walking around the event site encouraging fellow riders, although disappointed to be out of the competition. Tomorrow promises more excitement on the speed course as past world record holder Manu Taub (Wipika, France), along with last year’s winner Sebastien Cattalan (France), continue their pursuit of the new world record.

The skipper’s meeting is at 10 am tomorrow with a first possible start at 11 am. Riders will try to move ahead in the competition rankings during the double elimination tournament, which begins tomorrow. A DJ will be in the event tent starting at 11 pm tonight and every night this week.

X bow official introduction

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

The second generation of the revolutionary Crossbow kite continues its legacy as the leading performance bow kite. The Crossbow 2 is designed for maximum performance and efficiency - two of the key elements which provide the Crossbow with its now legendary hang time and freestyle reputation. By adding on to the foundation of its Pro Span Extreme arc, the Crossbows performance has improved yet again through the use of faster flying profiles, increased durability and the addition of our new Override and Sprint systems.

If hang time, performance freestyle, freeriding or surfing are your thing - the Crossbow is your kite.
Learn more about the new XBOW kite on the web.

POWERDRIVE 221 CONTROL SYSTEM
The Powerdrive 221 Control System (with pulleys) features an integrated 2 to 1 pulley purchase system. The 2 to 1 purchase system allows the rider to power and depower their kite in approximately half of the arm travel as a conventional control system without pulleys.

The new Powerdrive 221 control system features a host of refinements designed increase performance and decrease clutter. The Powerdrive 221 implements our impressive Override 2 stopper unit which provides a user definable depower on demand. Additionally the power adjusters have been integrated into the Override unit - which keeps them aligned with the depower line, reducing the chances of tangling.

The bar diameter has also been reduced and a new, softer EVA grip provides a positive, more hand-friendly feel.

LESS TIME RIGGING, MORE TIME RIDING.
Cabrinha introduces SPRINT single point rapid inflation system on the new Crossbow kite. Inflating your kite has never been easier. Just pull the kite out of the bag, hook the pump to a single valve and inflate the entire kite to the desired pressure. If youd like to roll up the kite with only the leading edge deflated, a set of lock off clips will ensure that the struts stay inflated.

View the SPRINT system on the web.

Cerveza Presidente Kiteboarding World Cup Cabarete 2006 – Day 4

Cerveza Presidente Kiteboarding World Cup Cabarete 2006 – Day 4

The fourth day of competition at the Cerveza Presidente Kiteboarding World Cup Cabarete 2006 dawned sunny and partly cloudy. The press tent was full to the brim in anticipation of the completion of the main event. Around noon, dark clouds started to roll in, turning the skies to gray. The wind fluctuated between 15 to 20 knots for the start of the day’s sequence, and ended up dieing off as afternoon storms approached Cabarete. One of the few riders to take to the water, Alvaro Onieva (Best, Spain) described the conditions as choppy, with fluky and inconsistent wind; “I struggled one moment to hold the kite down where the wind was strong on the outside, but in closer to the beach, it would just disappear leaving me with nothing.” Despite the lack of wind, competitors kept their spirits up by hanging out in the Red Bull tent savoring fresh fruit provided by the event organizers, or watching World Cup soccer matches as they draw towards the finals at nearby local establishments. Others enjoyed the atmosphere of Marabú’s beachside restaurant, thumping DJ and cool chill-out bar next door to Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding – A BEST kiteboarding school and test center. The media took advantage of the downtime to hold interviews with the riders, event organizers and PKRA officials.

The first of only two complete heats of the day featured the re-run of the extremely close match-up between the two Frenchmen, Etienne Lhote (F-One) and Mallory De la Villemarqué (North). Mallory, with his expert timing and well rehearsed trick sequence, came out with a big slimchance right on the starting horn. He continued to pound out a variety of other moves including a beautiful slim to blind and a KGB with his kite extremely low, while Etienne struggled, seeming underpowered. Etienne showed of a nice slim also and several mobe variations, however he crashed many of his landings, losing too much time downwind, leaving the door open for Mallory to advance. Etienne did not remain disappointed for long as both he and Mallory celebrated the victory of the French World Cup soccer team over longtime rival Brazil later in the afternoon.

Alvaro Onieva (Best, Spain) and Petr Tyushkevich (Cabrinha, Russian Federation) hit the water next. In spite of the poor kiting conditions, Alvaro pulled out his usual bag full of tricks such as a front mobe, double front to blind, blind judge, and a kiteloop frontloop with a grab. Petr, much larger than his opponent, struggled in the failing wind, but did manage to nail a KGB 180 and a kiteloop slim however, he lacked the variety that Alvaro displayed and will have to settle for a 9th place finish overall. North teammates Cesar Portas (Spain) and Mallory De la Villemarqué made a valiant attempt to start their heat but eventually, after being continually forced downwind and struggling to land a trick, it was abandoned because the wind was not up to PKRA standards. The AP flag went up and the competition went into a holding pattern until 4:30 pm when the event was finally cancelled for the day.

Tonight a special VIP and Beach party is planned at Marabu’s, starting around 9 pm. Adding to the evening’s festivities will be the beautiful Presidente girls and Puerto Rican models flown in just for the event. There will be plenty of refreshing Presidente beer and dancing to hip electronic vibes from top Ibizan DJ, José de Divina, as well as Canadian DJs, Maus and Scoy.

The Skippers meeting is planned for 10 am tomorrow morning with a first possible start at 10:30 am. The Freestyle Main Event is scheduled to wrap up and the Best Trick Contest will be held with an emphasis on kiteloop and downloop maneuvers

Cabarete Kitesurf Open and Dominican Championships - Results

From the 15th to the 17th of june, the Cabarete Kitesurf Open and Dominican Championships took place at Cabaretes Kite Beach. 39 local kiteboarders inscribed for the competition. In the single elimination on Friday, Alex Soto (Cabrinha, Cabarete Kiteboards, Dare2Fly) secured his top position with a strong overall performance. Waiting in the next positions were Melvin de Leon (Best), Raoul Urban (Kitexcite) and Yan Carlos Paulino(Best). On Saturday morning, the conditions looked promising and the riders got their gear ready after the skippers meeting at 11 am. In the end, it took the wind two more hours to be finally strong enough to start double elimination. The competition started off slow with some riders being hung over or giving up before the heats even started. The gusty winds and choppy water didn’t make it easy on the riders, but they showed that they are able to handle pressure and difficult conditions. In the round of the last 16 riders, the level increased significant and the atmosphere started to heat up.

Strongest riders in the double elimination were Kelvin Corniel (Kiteclub), Brian de Leon (Takoon), Luis Miguel Martinez (Airrush, Ufo, Dare2Fly) and Ariel Corniel (EH). Martinez and A. Corniel were the two riders meeting up with Fridays best seated four Urban, Paulino, de Leon and Soto. Specially the small Ariel Corniel was on fire. He had an incredible arsenal of handle pass maneuvers, landing one trick after another.
Martinez was riding super well, landing KGB’s, a Flat 3 and a Handlepass to blind, but it was not enough to stop little Ariel on his march forward to meet the top four. Ariel seemed handeling the difficult conditions (gusty winds) without any difficulties, landing all tricks (Mobes, 313, Slimchances, huge Kiteloops, Blindjudge and his signature move Double S-Bend to blind) on both tacks. Portimão, Portugal - There was plenty of exciting action on the water for the second day of the Portimão Kitesurf World Championships 2006. Overcast skies were ominous in the morning, however, the bad weather held off until mid day when there was about an hour postponement in the competition to let the first of several squalls pass. The wind was even better than the first day, in the morning averaging from 18-20 knots, fluctuating somewhat with the rain storms, and becoming very strong for the afternoon heats, hitting as much as 25 knots before the event was called for the day due to the foul weather. Conditions were pretty extreme with waves reaching 4-6 feet as the day wore on. The strong downwind current, the choppy shorebreak and the changing tide also wreaked havoc on riders trying to land smoothly and perform tricks close to the beach.

The first competitors took to the water at 10:30 am and the riders seemed to take the first round to warm up. Local Portuguese riders gave a good effort but were no match to the seasoned regulars on tour. Leshai Miller (Naish, Israel) won the award for the most powerful kiting of the day nailing the best back mobe, and going huge on every move, however, he wasn't able to land many of his tricks which held him back. Jan Korycki (Naish, Poland) was fired up, advancing three rounds displaying solid, powerful riding including a sweet Pete Rose, big kiteloops and back mobes, before being halted by Rui Meira (Naish, Portugal) in the fourth. Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha), the recent Italian champion, was also on fire passing to the third round with some nice kiteloop slims and blindjudges, to the thrill of his family cheering him on the beach.

Youri Zoon (Slingshot, Netherlands) ended Rondina's charge with some bold kiting, firing off a blind judge 3 and an arsenal of handlepass moves.

Youri's big, fast, fluid style with the kite at extreme angles is reminiscent of Ruben Lenten (still missing in action due to an ankle injury) and keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats. Cesar Portas (North, Spain) ended Youri's run in the fourth round with a close 2-1 judge's vote. Youri had the kite lower, firing off the same moves, such as a raley 3, mobe, slim, and KGB, however, Cesar was a bit more technical landing the higher scored switch KGB and back mobe to blind.

Cesar, struggled in the next round against fellow North teammate, Mallory De la Villemarque (France), breaking his board and not landing many tricks, overpowered with the oncoming storm's higher winds. Mallory nailed a switch mobe and switch aerial back to blind, keeping his kite lower and more powered, securing the win, commenting afterwards he had fun but sometimes felt like he was caught in a washing machine when crashing in the waves.

Madison Van Heurck (Naish, USVI), the youngest and smallest male on tour braved the elements, often getting lost behind the waves pulling huge moves, rattling off a full arsenal of handle pass tricks, advancing to the fourth round before losing his kite in the waves and shorewash against Mallory. Guilly Brandão (RRD, Brazil) also had a nice comeback charge in the doubles. His smooth, flowing riding style with good combination moves helped him advance to the fourth round before he was halted by Mikael Blomvall (JN Kites, Sweden).

Mikael Blomvall had an epic day, his best ever on the PKRA tour, even having to borrow kites along the way to the finals. After Guilly, Mikael took on Rui Meira in a close heat. Rui ripped, hitting a big kiteloop handlepass (L3) and back mobe but carried his kite higher and missed most of his landings in the waves. The nailbiting action continued against Mallory, who had a slick nosegrab slim but also carried less variety and power. And in the final men's heat of the day, Mikael battled it out with Etienne Lhote (F-One France). Etienne came out with a bang, blasting off a wave for a big air jump and getting the crowd cheering with a wave. Mikael, by this time tired and running out of energy, was still able to execute his textbook perfect KGB, slim, mobe and switch mobe, however lost a lot of time when he was ripped out of his board near the end of the heat. Etienne was not able to capitalize though, breaking his board going for a huge L3, coming in to switch it out but never managing to wrack up any more strong moves. Tomorrow Mikael will continue his charge for the winner's podium, knowing he has at least secured 4th place overall.

The stand out of the day for the women was Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland). Ania was on fire, first charging past Laima Baradaite (Cabrinha, Lithuania) then Angela Peral (North, Spain), who got lost in the waves and struggled to land her tricks. She went on to meet up with Katja Roose (Airrush, Netherlands), who was also having a strong day, having bested Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) in a close heat just prior, both with their families cheering them on from the beach. Unfortunately, Katja's lines were tangled from the mid day storm that even blew parts of the judge's tower away, and she had to switch bars, not knowing that the replacement was the wrong size causing her kite to crash due to no power and ending her winning run.

Ania seized the opportunity to continue her charge for the winner's podium taking on Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil) next. They seemed to match trick for trick, but in a close 3-2 judge's vote, Ania edged out the victory, displaying more moves on both tacks and riding with a ton of confidence and power. The day ended with Ania winning the quarterfinals against Karolina Winkoloska (Naish, Poland), who was seemingly washed downwind and unable to perform in the choppy water, before more rain brought the action to a halt until tomorrow.

Tonight the party is at the XL bar starting at 10 pm in the town of Alvor.

There should be a good turn out as most of the riders are finished the freestyle main event. For those who want to continue into the wee hours, the Katedral Disco is open every night from 2 am.

The skippers meeting at 10 am, with first possible start at 10:30 am.

Update on '07 Cabrinha Kite releases/features

Thursday, May 18, 2006

This one from the horse's mouth:

neilprydemaui.com :: View topic - Crossbow '07: "Aloha Dave,

I think the Sprint system will be featured in all 2007 Cabrinha kites. It's here to stay.

Override 2 is a definite, if not a further evolution of it. Too soon to say on that point.

Crossbow 2 should be in stores by August, Switchblade 2 soon thereafter. However, both are still in development and won't be released until perfected, so that schedule is tentative only.

CabrinhaKites - Sprint™

Wednesday, May 03, 2006

CabrinhaKites - Sprint™: "The Sprint™ inflation system is a simple to use feature to quickly inflate your kite to an even pressure. The Sprint™ system uses a single inflation point to connect your high volume, two way Cabrinha pump. As you pump your kite with air, all struts and your leading edge inflate quickly and simultaneously to the desired pressure. The supplied leash pump and threaded valve connection keeps your kite under control even when pumping up directly in the wind.

Once the kite is pumped you can choose to clip off, or isolate the air contained in the struts. This way if you damage a strut while in use, the rest of the kite will continue to maintain its pressure. At the end of the session you can choose to deflate your kite completely by disengaging the strut air clips. Or you can keep your struts inflated and put your kite away rolled up so that the next session will takes just minutes to set up."

Cabrinha's Override 2

Security Depower System
Cabrinha introduced the concept of Depower On Demand with the release of the innovative Override™ system. Now, with the introduction of Override™ 2, Cabrinha has once again redefined it. One of the most valuable features of a Cabrinha bow kite is it’s ability to immediately depower the kite on demand by simply pushing the control system into Override mode. With Override™ 2 you can avoid many accidents before they happen by maintaining control over the power of your kite at all times. Unlike many other kites, the Cabrinha bow kites can be depowered without ever taking your hands off of the control bar.

Another useful feature of Override is that you can temporarily let go of the control bar to un-spin your lines. When the Override stopper unit is seated on its sleeve it will temporarily stop the bar from entering the Override mode while you spin you bar to untwist your lines.

Override™ 2 Tension Ring
The stopper unit is set set to release at a load of approximately 10kg. A tension ring is supplied if you would like to increase the release load. With each click of the ring the tension is increased around the stopper and the release load becomes higher. It should be noted that increased loads will require more force to unseat the stopper and put the control bar into Override mode.

The Override unit is set at the factory in the position where the kite starts to lose its power. The area between the unit and the Centerline Adjustment Strap is called the Override mode. To depower the kite, push the control system into the Override mode. If the stopper unit is seated onto its sleeve you will need to unseat it with a firm push. When the control bar is pushed into the Override mode, the kite will lose its power and immediately begin to drop from the sky.

The recovery couldn’t be any simpler. Just grab ahold of the control bar, straighten the lines and its ready to relaunch again. If you want to re-set the Override stopper unit just pull it back onto the sleeve until it clicks into place.

When launching the kite from land it is recommended to leave the Override stopper unit off of it’s sleeve so that the kite can be depowered immediately by placing the bar into the Override mode.

Override 2 can also be used when performing unhooked tricks. First, be sure to unseat the Override stopper unit from its sleeve. Then connect your leash to the ring on the harness loop. When the rider drops the bar during a missed trick attempt, the kite will depower and fall from the sky. To recover the kite just grab ahold of the control bar, un-spin any twists in the line and relaunch the kite.
