Cabrinha Race Series - Race #4

Image

Image

Kafka Captures Top Spot

WOW! Race night #4 was spectacular. Twenty one racers waited to the very last minute to determine the appropriate size kite to rig; most chose 9s and 10s. The enthusiasm was high as this was the conclusion of the Cabrinha Mini Series #1 and the top three winners would be determined tonight. The “mini series #1” is based on the first four race nights with one throw out. The first race was held in winds ranging from 23-32, averaging 27 on an eb tide. By the third race the winds had subsided a bit to 18-29 averaging 22 and a flood.
Image

Once again, Cabrinha’s Jeff Kafka took the top honors for the evening with a total of 4 points (1,2,1). Jeff rode his 9M XB2 and his 5’6” Prisoner of Wind Race Quad. Chip Wasson (Ozone) rode his 10.5M Sport and his Carafino foil board to a second for the evening with 5 points (2,1,2), while Anthony Chavez (Naish) rode his 10M Torch and his 2006 Chavez custom to a strong third with 9 points (3,3,3)

In the first race, Kafka took a quick lead, was first to the windward mark, and built a commanding lead to the finish. He remains the fastest of the racers downwind, while Chip is emerging as being able to point the highest upwind. Chip and Anthony battled it out around the course with Wasson getting the better of Chavez on the last upwind leg.
Image

In the second race, both Chip and Anthony bettered Kafka to the windward mark and by a substantial distance. Kafka then proceeded to blow by Chip and Anthony on the downwind leg, with Chip being able to recaptured the lead on the last upwind leg.
Image

In the third race, it was Kafka and Anthony that battled from the start and were neck and neck on both the upwind and downwind legs with Anthony having about a 10 yard lead at the leeward mark. Anthony fell rounding the mark and knowing he wasn’t going to catch Kafka by following him on the port tack towards the middle of the Bay, decided to try a starboard tack back towards the Yacht Club. Well, the tactic didn’t pay off. Not only didn’t he catch Kafka, but Chip managed to sneak by him as well.
Image

The evening the racing was fierce. Kafka, Chip, and Anthony battled all evening for the top three spots, while a second group of racers; Chris Brown (17 pts), Gabe Brown (21 pts), Geoff Headington (23 pts), Eric Due (24 pts), Ovi Banuto (24 pts), Kris Youngblood 25 pts, and Stefaans Viljoens (26 pts), battled it out for spots 4,through10. Like I said earlier….the racing was spectacular!!!!!! And in case you were wondering, Shawn Richman who entered the evening in second overall was ill and couldn’t make it down from Oregon, while Mark Bosta entered the night 6th overall was completing his race committee responsibilities.
Image

With tonights racing “on the books,” Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha) emerged and the winner of the Cabrinha Mini Series #1 with 3 points (1,1,1), Chip Wasson (Ozone) with his best performance of the season moved from 4th to 2nd with 11 points (5,4,2), and Chris Brown (SS) finished 3rd with 12 points (4,4,4). These three are also the leaders for the overall Cabrinha Race Series (in the same order), followed closely by Viljoens, Headington, Bosta, and Chavez.
Image

After racing we conducted the free raffle of Ts and hats from our sponsors and presented the awards from Cabrinha for the Cabrinha Mini Series #1.

The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Ozone Travel, Adventure Sports Miami, Adventure Sports Inc. and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Cabrinha Race Series - the big boys come out to play

Kafka Dominates in Light Air

Cabrinha’s Jeff Kafka kited to three bullets against 21 racers in 14-15mph winds and a pretty decent flood by the middle of the second race. Anthony Chavez, last years winner did not race as he was fulfilling his race committee responsibilities. Geoff Headington, the 2006 runner up was out of town and also did not race.

Jeff Kafka rode his Cabrinha 14 Contra and his 5’6” Prisoner of Wind Race Quad to three firsts and 3 points for the overall win. The surprise of the evening were the much improved Marcelo Segura (RRD) and Mark Bosta (Naish). Marcello was second with 7 points (3,2,2) and Bosta third with 12 points (4,5,3) Both rode their 14m kites.

Marcello and Mark were 8th and 7th respectively in the first night of racing. Jeff Ruoss unveiled his “secret race board” with not a lot of fanfare. He finished tied for 4th with 13 points (5,4,4). About the same as he did in the 2006 series. His new board is a twin tip with two 2 1/2” fins, (one on each end in the center) and with a retractable centerboard. Chip continued to dial in his foil board and tied for 4th with 13 points (2,3,. To this observer, both of these boards seem to go to weather at a steeper angle than the other racers.

Watch out for both of these guys. In the first race, Chip was sailing at a much steeper angle than the other racers, and was first to the weather mark. However, Kafka was much faster off the wind and was first to the leeward mark and finish by a substantial distance. In the second race, Kafka, Chip and Bosta all started on a port tack at the pin end of the start line while the rest of the fleet started on starboard at the committee boat end of the line. Kafka was able to maintain his tack staying clear of the fleet and with a commanding lead. Chip needed to yield way and went into the water while Bosta needed to weave his way thru the fleet loosing some valuable ground.

Both recovered nicely to finish 2nd and fifth respectively.. In the third race, both Marcelo and Bosta were first to the weather mark, but Kafka caught them on the downwind leg in front of the Yacht Club and continued to pull away to the finish. Photo by Paul Buelow The 2007 Cabrinha Race Series thru 2 nights of racing has seen a very competitive fleet with the usual suspects near the top ( Anthony, Kafka, Chip, Jeff R, Geoff H, Steve G) joined by some newer faces near the top (Stefaans, Marcelo, Bosta, Chris B). When writing up the results of race night #1, I had an oversight that I would like to correct. Chris Brown(SS) finished 4th overall with 22 points (8,3,4,7). This was significant as two Pro guests, Cabrinha’s Richman brothers finished 2, and 3rd, and the fact that this was Chris’ “rookie” race night. As Chris has been a regular on the local kiteboarding scene,

I did not equate Chris with being a “rookie. Job well done! How did I realize this oversight? Well, Chris pointed it out to me at the bar :-). Join us for the next race on June 14. The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Ozone Travel, Adventure Sports Miami, Adventure sports Inc., and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Cabrinha Race Series Results - Race 1

It Blows for the 2007 Cabrinha Race Series

After having the first two race evenings canceled due to poor conditions, the third time was the charm. Crissy Field greeted the racers with 20-35 miles per
hour wind and with up to 5ft swell rolling through the Gate. Standing on the beach and deciding what kite to rig turned out to be a difficult but critical call . Racers were rigging from 6 meters to 13 meters, with most finally deciding on 7-10m kites.

The conditions were extreme even for Crissy. The swell and the strong wind made for a very tough racing. The starts were just as difficult as the conditions, as half the fleet started on starboard while the other half on port.

There were four races with 32 riders, and for the first time a triangle course was introduced (windward, reaching, leeward). Last years champion, Anthony Chavez (Naish) and Cabrinha’s Jeff Kafka resumed their 2006 battle by leading the pack in the first 2 races but were DSQ’d as they rounded the wrong reaching mark which put them out of contention for the evening. Incidentally, Kafka finished with a first in races 3 and 4 with Chavez a 2 and 3, putting them in 10th place and 12th place at the end of the day. With them out of the way, the battle was for the first three places was between Cabrinha’s Richman brothers and local Stefaans Viljoen (SS). In the end, Viljoen came out on top with 13 pts (3,2,3,5). Jesse Richman finished 2nd with 14 pts (1,1,10, 2) and Shawn Richman 3rd with 20 pts (2,9,5,4).

Another highlight of the evening, Chip Wasson introduced a foil board to closed course kite racing. Chip finished a respectable 5th. In talking with Chip he indicated that he is using a smaller foil and shorter shaft than normal, and kite size is critical. He used an 11m which was too much power for the board and kept driving the board into the water loosing the advantage of the foil. Chip indicated he should have gone with the 7m which he had also rigged.

The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Ozone Travel, Adventure Sports Miami, and Adventure Sports, Inc., and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Prizes for WOW and Kite Adventures Race Series

Wind Over Water and Kite Adventures have worked on some great prizes for the winners of the WOW and KA Race Club Series.

We hope you come out, have a blast and increase your racing skills!

The first place winner takes home a 7-Day all-expense paid (not including flights) Kite Adventure Brazil tour.

With constant wind (18-30+ knots) from July through January, Brazil really is a kiter’s paradise. Our 7-Day tour begins after the airport pick up, we take you kiting in 4x4s on the beach through Cumbuco and Paracuru. Cumbuco is a hip little fishing village that's famous for the Cauipe lagoon. From there, we downwind to Paracuru which is the best spot for flat water, waves, and consistent wind. We downwind the days away spending 5-6 hours on the water per day. After 3 days, we take you back to Cumbuco before departing for the airport the next day. The winner has the option to extend to 10-Days and include the world famous Jericoacoara (incredible downwinders, and awesome nightlife) just paying the difference in tours ($500).

Many of the Bay Area kiters have been on our trips and have loved it. See what they’ve had to say: http://www.bayareakiteboarding.com/viewtopic.php?t=3809 http://www.bayareakiteboarding.com/viewtopic.php?t=3708

The Second Place Winner takes home a Jeff Kafka original Neptune Tri Halo 5’2” Waveboard Tri Halo: This board is a traditional tri fin set up with a wide out line and a rounded pintail. It needs to be ridden a bit slower, once you get into a wave you really want to try to spill the power of the kite and surf the wave.

These boards are designed for down the line surfing, meaning longer drawn out turns with more stability. Check out more info here: http://www.wowkite.com/web/surfboard.htm Register before May 10 to guarantee your spot for Thursday! See you at the Races!

Skegness X-Fest

X-Fest: Kitesurfing Party To Hit Skegness

X-Fest -- They said there would be no wind for Xfest 2006 but Skegness showed why it is so bracing and proved the forecasters wrong. And now organiser Skegness Surf and Kite Academy is preparing to make it big again by staging a round of the British Kite Surfing Association 2007 Freestyle Championships.

Thousands of people from all over the country are expected to flock to the East Coast to soak up three days of Pro Tour action on the sea and beach area starting on Friday, June 22, until Sunday, June 24, on North Beach, Skegness.
This year the Skegness event is linking with the BKSA round being held at Hunstanton the weekend before as part of a new Wash series.BKSA chairman Richard Gowers said: “I think both the East coast events are going to be mega busy - the Barrow one is getting a lot of interest - the whole tour is getting quite a reputation for great riding and great parties!!”
A highlight of the weekend, which also includes a skate jam hosted by Xsite Skate Park, is a horsesurfing spectacular by Independent Horse stunt riders on the Sunday.
A free party, live bands, fireworks, trade and craft stalls are also billed to help make the weekend rock.

"In 2006, Skegness gained credibility as an extreme sports destination. The riders loved it and said they couldn't wait to come back," said event director Chrissie Redford. "This year, as part of the Pro Tour, it is set to be even more of a spectacle - and very exciting for the future of the resort." For more information or to book a trade stall email skegxfest@yahoo.co.uk or telephone (01754) 898202. Accommodation deals and registration details are available by emailing events@kitesurfing.org

Wind Over Water and Kite Adventures Race Club
We are so excited to announce the Wind Over Water and Kite Adventures Race Club Series held at 3rd Avenue in San Mateo on alternating Thursdays throughout the summer beginning on May 10, 2007 and continuing through September 6, 2007. Providing an alternative race location in the South Bay gives more Bay Area kiters an opportunity to participate in course racing on a regular basis. We think that course racing will become a large part of the future of kiteboarding as it’s more accessible to a broader range of kiteboarders than technical freestyle competitions. Races will begin at 5pm sharp with a Skippers meeting at 4:30pm at the upper launch of 3rd Avenue. Racers will compete on the standard windward leeward course, the same course as the Cabrinha Race Series. There will be 4 heats of races per night, with the possibility to open up a girl’s race heat depending on interest. We will also update you on the post race hang out in Burlingame...

Movistar PKRA Venezuela Kiteboarding World Tour 2007

RESS RELEASE:

Movistar PKRA Venezuela Kiteboarding World Tour 2007

Women's Single Elimination Round

Thursday 19 April

"After two days of wind delay, the third day of the Movistar Kiteboarding World Cup 2007 got started with a bang. There were clear sunny skies as usual and the wind was definitely stronger in El Yaque compared to the past few days in Coche, averaging between 15 to 20 knots (5 bft), building from early in the morning throughout the afternoon, and peaking at around 2 pm …

… The women’s division have also stepped it up this year with more and more riders showing off technical and powerful moves such as aerial handle pass tricks, slimchances, and mobes, which in the past were usually reserved for the men’s division. In Heat #2B, young Gisela Pulido (Slingshot, Spain) showed her stuff by beating out Clarissa Hempel (Cabrinha, Brazil) with a slim, 313, front mobe and blind judge while Hempel went for huge kite loops and downloops. Karolina Winkowska (Naish, Poland) landed a powered mobe and a blind judge and won her heat compellingly against friend and fellow Polish countryperson, Ola Tomkowicz (Best.)

In the quarterfinals, Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) unleashed an array of surface pass moves, while up and coming Pulido had several aerial pass tricks up her sleeves including an S-bend 3, a 313 and front mobe, to beat out Ania for a spot in the semis. In separate quarterfinal heats, Winkowska landed a nice blind judge, front to blind, and 313 while Angela Peral (North, Spain) was only able to manage several surface pass moves including a back to wrapped, raley to blind and downloop to blind, loosing her spot in the semis.

Pulido continued her charge to the podium overcoming Jo Wilson (Naish, UK) in the semis with a front mobe, 313, slim and aerial back to blind. Wilson replied, going for mobes and an aerial back to blind, but without success.

Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil) defeated Winkowska’s mobe and 313 in their semifinal heat and astonished the crowd when she landed an NIS, S-bend 3 and aerial back to blind, so smooth and powered that they rivaled the men’s! She then went on to edge out Pulido for a first place finish. Winkowska landed a mobe and raley to blind ensuring her place on the podium in third, with Wilson taking fourth."

Women’s Single Elimination Results:
1) Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil)
2) Gisela Pulido (Slingshot, Spain)
3) Karolina Winkowska (Naish, Poland)
4) Jo Wilson (Naish, UK)

Women's Double Elimination Round

Saturday 21 April

"The fifth and final day of the Movistar Kiteboarding World Cup 2007 in Isla Margarita … kicked off with a huge crowd lining the beach cheering for their favorite riders under brilliant sunny skies. The wind was noticeably lighter during the morning but gradually picked up during the afternoon competition, forcing most of the riders to take out their larger kites …

… The women’s finals provided the crowds much excitement and nailbiting suspense going into a winner’s double elimination heat. Pulido won the first round of the women’s doubles final with some solid moves landing a 313, slim chance and front and back to blind against Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil). Bruna was a bit underpowered with a smaller kite and only managed clean landings on a blind judge, raley to blind and back to blind while crashing her attemps for an S-bend 1 and NIS. In round two though, with lesson learned, Bruna came back charging with a larger kite, throwing down a beautiful powered and low kite angled non-inverted slim chance, 313, S-bend 1, blind judge, raley to wrapped, and back to blind. Pulido went for a variety of superb technical moves, nailing a slim chance, 313 and front mobe, but a higher kite angle and slower entry/exit speeds to her tricks gave the edge to Kajiya and the coveted top spot on the podium."

Women's Double Elimination Final Results
1) Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil)
2) Gisela Pulido (Slingshot, Spain)
3) Karolina Winkowska (Naish, Poland)
4) Jo Wilson (Naish, UK)
