Windcatchers do some good

Monday, May 21, 2007

The first WC Moving@BEACH happened last May 5th, in Nova Vaga kitebeach atCosta Caparica, Lisbon. The purpose of this activity was to give a different day to 30 kids, letting them have the first touch in kitesurfing, which in any other waywould hardly exist.

It was a success!Lots of smiles and laughs showed the gratefulness to all the volunteers that joined Wind Catchers in this initiative.Despite the relaxed way we handled this day, it was prepared with muchdedication and care, so that all the logistic and human resources wereready when the 30 anxious kids invade the beach!

From the paramedic to the afternoon snacks, everything was carefullyhandled by the organization and the volunteers that gathered this sharingmovement! This Saturday is registered with some pictures and a video clip at http://www.windcatchers.org/, a day that will be hardly forgotten by the kids andall the participating riders! The Wind Catchers thank for all the support, and promise a new WCMoving@BEACH further North ;)

Kite Powered Wind Generator

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Scientists look high in the sky for power Jet stream could fill global energy needs, researchers say Scientists are eyeing the jet stream, an energy source that rages night and day, 365 days a year, just a few miles above our heads. If they can tap into its fierce winds, the world's entire electrical needs could be met, they say. The trick is figuring out how to harness the energy and get it down to the ground cost-effectively and safely. Dozens of researchers in California and around the world believe huge kite-like wind-power generators could be the solution. As bizarre as that might seem, respected experts say the idea is sound enough to justify further investigation. The jet stream typically blows from west to east 6 to 9 miles over the northern hemisphere at speeds up to 310 mph.

I don't even know what to say about this one. Is this predicated on the Zebra herd principle, or the shark laughing so hard it will forget it's hungry? Anyone out at Stinson want to try that wetsuit? My treat.

The kite-surfer's car, as imagined by whacky Japanese concept car designers

Who knew that the Japanese were thinking of us while designing their cars. Unfortunately this one looks like it has come out on the losing end of a nasty fight with a hyena. Some highlights: hidden center-tunnel with room for kiteboard, integrated digital camera for taking beach shots, rubber boot (trunk) for transporting wet items without that moldy funk creeping in, sand-and -water-proof switches. Even the cheese-grater marks are apparently attuned to a kite lifestyle: "Natural flow lines are all around us _wind blowing shapes in sand, wave forms seen from above _and are literally symbolic of movement itself."

KITEBOARD ISLAND LEAP

:: SEPT. 6, 2006 PREMIERES ::

KITEBOARD ISLAND LEAP
Jason Slezak would like to execute the largest land gap ever attempted, ramp to ramp, on a kiteboard. He will approach the takeoff ramp at a high rate of speed in order to achieve the required height (approx. 30-40 feet) and distance necessary to clear an entire island, complete with trees and animals, all while flying over a camera to document this incredible feat. Jason will then have to land on a down ramp on the opposite side of the island. Adding to the difficulty of this stunt, Jason will have to estimate his landing as he will not be able to view the other side of the island from the takeoff ramp. Many factors such as wind speed and direction, wave size, his speed and position must work in unison for this stunt to be a success. The stunt requires the extraordinary ability to combine skills from a variety of disciplines, such as wakeboarding, surfing, sailing and flying, into one spectacular, unique act.
Premiere: Sept. 6, 2006

Great story about a trucker who kites

Thursday, July 20, 2006

Entertainment was not hard to find around the premesis of Rufus last weekend. We were graced by the presence of a mysterious gypsy trucker from Venezuela that was about as bizarre as they come. The photos below tell the story but....

The only story we are missing is Kurt standing at the waters edge dumbfounded with David yelling at him "You're scared like a LADY!" David repeated himself many times referring to Kurt ducking when David was swinging his kite all over the beach (thankfully empty) and Kurt, amazingly, kept his cool. Nice job, Kurt, but we think you could have taken him, in one lick and if not, we would have had your back! Smile

"What do you mean tap your head to land? I always do it myself!"

Press Release - Gay Kite Surfers to Double by 2008 According to AKSA

Thursday, June 15, 2006

Press Release - Gay Kite Surfers to Double by 2008 According to AKSA: "Gay Kite Surfers to Double by 2008 According to AKSA"

ithin two years, according to research commissioned by AKSA, the newly formed American Kite Surfing Association, 12% of the sport will be enjoyed by gays and lesbians.

In the largest survey of extreme sports enthusiasts ever conducted, TR Cutler, Inc., revealed that members of the community are increasingly interested in kite surfing. This demographic trend follows the trend established in water surfing nearly forty years ago.

Several of the manufacturers are behind the curve of this trend and are just starting to recognize the gay extreme sports market.

2006 2008

Orientation
Gay 6% 12%
Straight 94% 88%

Logan Long, President and Co-founder of the AKSA said, "This organization is about inclusion. Many of the old-timers in the sport are arrogant and try to exclude the efforts of new participants. AKSA is about welcoming everyone to the sport of kite surfing regardless of experience level, race, ethnicity, gender, or orientation. We believe kite surfing is a great sport for anyone who loves thrills and adventure."

American Kite Surfing Association (AKSA) is the leading organization for kite surfers in North America. Founded in 2006 by two extreme sport enthusiasts, membership is anticipated to exceed 30,000 before the end of the year. The purpose of the enterprise is to bring heightened awareness to this fast-growing, dynamic, and fun sport. A vast array of information, products, and techniques are available to the visitors of the AKSA website, www.kite-surfingusa.com. After more than a decade of popularity through Europe and Australia, active North American extreme sport athletes are recognizing the maximum adrenaline rush through kite surfing.

This dramatic interest in the athletically demanding sport has given AKSA founders encouragement about the value of their newly founded organization. AKSA will select 50 leading industry product manufacturers to highlight and profile throughout an extensive national media outreach campaign.

Ode to a Jet-Ski person

Seabreeze Forums! - Ode to a Jet-Ski person: "Ode to a Jet-Ski person

Jet-ski person, selfish fink.
May your silly jet-ski sink.
May you hit a pile of rocks,
Oh hoonish summer coastal pox

Noisy smoking dickhead fool,
On your loathsome leisure tool,
Give us all a jolly lark
And sink beside a hungry shark

Scream as in it’s fangs you go
Your last attention-seeking show
While on the beach we all join in
With “three cheers for the dorsal fin”

Welcome to SkySails!: "SkySails - Shipping's new power!

SkySails is developing, manufacturing and distributing towing kite propulsion systems for modern shipping. By using a SkySails system ship operation will become more profitable, safer and independent of declining oil reserves.

The planned product range contains towing kite propulsion systems with a nominal propulsion power of up to 5,000 kW (about 6,800 HP). On annual average fuel costs can be lowered between 10-35% depending on actual wind conditions and actual time deployed. Under optimal wind conditions, fuel consumptions can temporarily be reduced up to 50%.

From the second half of 2006 pilot systems for superyachts will be available. In 2007 the first SkySails-Systems with towing-kite areas of up to 320m² for cargo vessels will be available. In 2007 series production of the SkySails systems for super yachts, in 2008 series production for cargo vessels will start."

Kiteboarding the atlantic, oh my

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Kiteboarding.be

At the age of 43, Manu Bertin, the founding father of kite-surfing has lost none of his enthusiasm for a challenge. He will be setting out in mid-April from the island of La Gomera in the Canaries to kite-surf across the Atlantic. It was from this same island that Christopher Columbus set out to discover the new world.

To succeed in this new campaign and to continue to evolve, Manu will be using three different means pulled along by a kite one after the other:

- the kite-surfing board with which he has already crossed the English Channel, the Mediterranean and the Straits between Maui and the main island of Hawaii (with a wing kitesurf mast / upright position),

- a catamaran whose floats are large surf boards (with a wing kitesurf mast / seated position on a cradle in the middle) ,

- an inflatable longboat - named Cochise – for the periods of rest and eating (kite-surfing with one cord / laying down).

The 50-foot catamaran "Baies du Monde" will help him with the logistics and supplies (going from one means to another). Manu Bertin will not go on board during the attempt. This rapid TS 50 yacht is skippered by Pierre Corriveaud, the winner of the Jules Verne Trophy on the Geronimo trimaran in 2004.
The crew is made up of 4 people, including the owner Didier Courant, who will also be in charge of photography.

The sporting goal for Manu Bertin is to go as far as possible towards the Caribbean, which is some 3000 nautical miles to the west.
