... Where the wind blows !
Barra Grande is a small primative fishing village on the Parnaiba's Delta. It is surrounded by coconut groves which provide shade and a tropical setting. The consistant winds and warm waters (28 degrees celcius) make it perfect for kiteboarding and windsurfing!

SF Kitesurfing Trip to Brazil

Monday, May 21, 2007

Kite Adventures would like to offer the SF kiting community a custom 10-Day tour spanning 300 km of coastline in the northeast of Brazil. The dates are: November 18-27, 2007. This trip would be reserved entirely for members of SF kiting community, giving you guys the opportunity to kite together in the most amazing kite destination in the world. The wind in this region blows a steady 18-30 knots everyday from July through January. Dave and I will be there as well, so we are totally psyched to kite with you in Brazil!

We take you kiting, traveling most of the coast by beach, and downwinding many stretches with 4x4 or dune buggy support following along on the beach for safety. We begin the tour in Cumbuco, and over the next 10 days continue on to Paracuru, eventually arriving in Jericoacoara. Cumbuco is a hip little fishing village that's famous for the flat-water Cauipe lagoon. After 2 nights in Cumbuco, we downwind to Paracuru for the next 3 nights, which is the best spot for both flat water and waves. At low tide, the bay is protected by a reef so you can kite both flat water on the inside, and big breaking waves out on the reef. During our journey to Jericoacoara, we cross river mouths by raft, and doing downwinders along the way. Jericoacoara is a magical little oasis built on the sand in the middle of a national reserve, surrounded by massive sand dunes. All the streets are made of sand, and the only way to access the town by driving 12km along the beach, or driving up and over the dunes. We'll spend the next 4 nights here, and take you in dune buggies to kite during the day, enjoying some of the best downwinders in all of Brazil. When the tour is over, we return you to Cumbuco/Fortaleza.

We design our tours so it's the perfect combination of kiting, nightlife and as much Brazilian sun as you can handle! We help you maximize your kiting time in Brazil, taking full advantage of all the best the region has to offer, with a minimum amount of hassle. You literally just show up and kite, and we take care of the rest. We bring you to the best spots at the right time for the current wind and tide conditions, and facilitate guided, safety-supported downwinders that would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to arrange on your own. Most of our customers liken what we offer to heli-skiing.

At the end of the tour, some of our customers report that they think they kited nearly as much as they had in an entire season. Most report that their kiteboarding skills had improved substantially simply from having wind all the time, and the ability to kite as much as they wanted during the trip.

See what our past customers have to say about their experience:

Video: Kite Adventures Brazil (link to http://www.kiteadventures.com/videoPlayer.php?type=mov&file=ka_small002.mov&width=320&height=240)

We’d like to get your opinion of kites you’d all be interested in demoing and/or if there’s someone here (Civvy?) that would like to come down and handle the demo on the tour. That is something we can try to work on. Also, we don't personally offer instruction, but this may be a great opportunity to also include an instructor from the area to provide advanced instruction during the tour. If some or all of the group is interested, we'd be happy to help coordinate the logistics for the instructor, but how the tour cost and instructor would be compensated should be agreed upon directly between the instructor and the group. For example, in the past we've had the people interested in instruction cover all or part of the instructor's trip cost as compensation, but exactly how that's handled is entirely up to the group.

We average about 4-5 hours of kiting per day, but you can kite as little or as much as you like! Brazil is an amazing country with lots of delicious food, culture and of course nightlife.

Our trips typically start on Sunday and end on a Tuesday. You are welcome to shorten it to a 7-Day and come back on a Saturday. However, The 7-Day trips skip Jericoacoara, which most people who've come on our trips tell us they couldn't imagine missing.

Image

The trip includes:

* All transfers to and from the airport
* Alberto, world class guide handles everything for you.
* 4x4 beach travel along coast, covering 10+ beaches
* Kite surfaris
* Accommodation in various pousadas (hotels)
* "Epic" Downwinders with safety support vehicles
* All breakfasts

Everything except lunch, dinner and entertainment.

The price is $1799*, if we fill it up with 10 kiters the price will be $1699 per person.

We have many dates on the calendar if T-Giving doesn't work for you.

*$40 extra per night if you want your own room.

It would be great to get a thread started, or you can email me: jessie@kiteadventures.com

The Kite Commute

The Kite Commute

"For many people the daily rush hour commute is one of the worst parts of the day.
But for David Grimes, who simply sails past all the traffic, it is one of the best.
Every morning, instead of donning his suit and tie, the 37-year-old from Shoreham puts on his wetsuit and kitesurfs into the office.

He arrives, wet but exhilarated on Brighton beach, just in time for a quick change back into his smart clothes before sitting down at his desk for a day's work.
Mr Grimes said: "It's a great workout and it's a really fun way of getting to work. It certainly beats being stuck in the traffic.
"The wind we get here on the coast is predominantly south westerly so it takes me right along from Shoreham to Brighton in about the same time it would take me to drive, around half an hour."
Once he has ridden the waves to work Mr Grimes pulls up on a slipway south of Middle Street, Brighton, where he hauls all his equipment up the beach."

Snowkite expedition greenland 2007- 24h record

The Project:A first time ever crossing of Greeenlands Icecap with snowboard and kiteOur goal is to attempt an ice cap crossing for the first time ever with snowboard and kite, also called snowkiting, by hauling all the equipment in a pulka (sled). Also making a 24hours distance record on snowboard and kite on the icecap.

We will follow a new crossing route, starting from the southern tip of Greenland's icecap and heading north to one of the settlements on the West. Starting from the south gives us an opportunity to have more favourable winds and to go faster. The trip will take approximately 30-40 days, period departure august 2007

Ecological: through this expedition we believe that we have a unique opportunity to help raise awareness of the importance of wind and the energy that can be harnessed from this element. And of course the climate changes in Greenland and the effects on Europe.more info on the website http://www.firstdescents.eu/

THE SHINN CENTRE - TENERIFE, OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Thursday, April 26, 2007

THE SHINN CENTRE - TENERIFE, OPEN FOR BUSINESS

The Shinn centre based in El Medano, a very typical Canarian village in the south of Tenerife boasts kites from many leading kite manufacturers, as well as, the full range of Nobile, NBL and Shinn boards. The centre with a difference offers visitors the opportunity to try and vary any kite and board combination, giving them the chance to become their own test rider. Riders can also perfect their skills through lessons and clinics catering for all abilities and needs.

Visitors can choose between traditional C, bow and hybrid kites from the 2007 ranges of Airush, Blade, Best, Carbrinha, EH, Flexifoil, Naish, North, Ozone and RRD in sizes from 5m to 16m. The full range of Nobile 555 and 666 boards are available, as well as, Mark Shinn´s own range of boards, including the new hybrid wave for versatile and accessible wave-sailing and skimboards for those wanting to experience the most fun on offer in kiteboarding.

Shinn comments, “With so much hype and so many conflicting opinions on the forums, the centre really represents a unique opportunity for riders to feel and experience for themselves the variety of kit available in the market today and what is best suited to them.”

Even visiting kitesurfers with their own kit can take the opportunity to try the latest equipment available or test to fill a gap in their quiver. Board or kite only rental is available from anything from an hour through to weeks at a time. Whether using their own kit or the centre´s, visitors can take the opportunity to improve their sailing level through lessons or clinics. Catering from complete beginner to expert, riders can take their first steps into the water with a kite or perfect the very latest, powered free style moves. Courses can be booked individually or for groups and can also cater for riders wanting to start or improve their wave riding. Storage is available for those bringing their own kit and accommodation can be arranged for those wanting their stay as hassle free as possible.

El Medano is situated in the south east of Tenerife and features four different sailing spots from flat water to waves. The Canary Islands are well known for their warm weather and consistent all year round winds. However, there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained on those few non-windy days. As well as world class surfing and mountain biking there is also excellent climbing, hiking and horse riding. The island also has a host of sight seeing attractions and places of interest.

For more information about the Shinn Test Centre or to pre-book please call 0034 687478736 or e-mail info@theshinncentre.com

AK Surfing Article

http://media.www.thenorthernlight.org/media/storage/paper960/news/2007/04/17/Sports/Kiteboarding.Takes.Off.As.New.Extreme.Sport.In.Alaska-2844541.shtml

"A new sport has moved in and is making a name for itself in a small, but growing community here in south-central Alaska. It doesn't require gasoline, waiting in annoying lift lines or contemplating avalanche danger. With a little wind, some desire, and a steady flow of adrenaline, kiteboarding has blown its way into Alaska.

Kiteboarding is similar in style to snowboarding or wakeboarding, where carving and aerial tricks are a big part of the game. Unlike snowboarding, however, kiteboarding harnesses the wind, not gravity, to provide the ride. Using kites that somewhat resemble small parachutes, riders glide over snow while being pulled from the wind collected in their sails."

Great Venezuela Kiting Story

Thanks to Jessie from KA for another great adventure. Man If only I had her life.

A Teaser:

"Why Venezuela should be in the Top 5 of everyone's kite travel list

Imagine getting dropped off an uninhabited desert island with only your kite gear, then spending the day downwinding in 20+ knots from island to island to island, over crystal clear, shallow flat Caribbean-blue water. We did that and much more during our recent scouting trip to Venezuela, solidly placing it in our Top 5 list of must-see destinations. "

Just don't call it the "best" odyseey. I like my marketing subtle not like a tom and jerry cartoon. Sounds like a great gig all in all. I especially like the "non-vegetarian requirement. You will eat fish and like it dammit.

One issue though: "preferably male" is a good way to sound like a twat, and get yourself sued. I know plenty of female sailors who can out-hoist, out-muscle, and generally take care of business on a boat. If you agree, send them en email and let them know they should be a little more appreciative of the ladies.

New Sponsor for Island Odyssey

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

Fiji’s national carrier Air Pacific has joined the Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey as a key sponsor of this world-first, all-girl kiteboarding adventure.

The airline has offered generous discounts to all participants of the remote Fiji island experience and given free flights for crew. Girls attending the event will get discounts off the lowest fares available, with 12% off bookings from North America, 10% off for Australia, 5% from New Zealand and a 21 day Apex fare in Japan. Air Pacific has also offered free excess baggage for all involved.

“Fiji’s national carrier has been wonderfully supportive, it’s typical of Fiji’s welcoming nature. Having these discounts opens up an opportunity for even more girls from all over the world to have the time of their lives on a beautiful island in the pacific. I’m so happy,” says event organiser Cindy Mosey.

Fiji’s national airline Sun Air has also come aboard as a sponsor providing a chartered plane to the event destination, Kadavu Island.

Kadavu was selected for its combination of perfect winds, tropical beauty, a huge range of alternative recreational activities, and a true cultural experience with the unbelievably welcoming villagers of this pacific paradise.

Sometimes described as ‘the real Fiji’, Kadavu has untouched lush tropical rainforest, waterfalls, no roads (all transport is by boat) and remote villages ringed by the world’s fourth largest barrier reef, teeming with abundant marine life.

Taking part in the event will be 12 of the world’s best women kiteboarders and another 30 recreational riders from around the globe. The event would not have been possible without the support of Balance Vector and there are generous prizes from sponsors North Kites, Living Nature cosmetics and more.

Spaces are still available to girls wanting to join the odyssey! Visit www.cindymoseyislandodyssey.com Direct travel booking enquiries to Cindy at cmaswm@xtra.co.nz. Media contact alisonsmith@xtra.co.nz for more information or visit the website www.cindymoseyislandodyssey.com for a selection of images.

Kite Odyssey now the "best" kite odyssey..with kite adventures

Thursday, September 07, 2006

Image

Offshore Odysseys has announced two key partnerships in their soon-to-launch world kiteboarding expedition
The BEST Odyssey. Owner, Gavin McClurg says aligning with Kite Adventures brings the reality of the journey even closer.
"What Kite Adventures are doing with their Kite-With-A-Pro series, and their incredible tour offerings in Brazil, Greece, Sardinia, Thailand and Vietnam,
all that coupled with our association with Best Kiteboarding; it just made a partnership an obvious choice and one we're thrilled to have." As The BEST Odyssey is a 5 year
expedition and available on a yacht share basis, Kite Adventures will now own one trip each year of the expedition to sell on a per-person, or per cabin basis to anyone interested in joining the journey, but not able to commit to the full 5 years as a share owner.

This year's stop is a 10 day adventure in Aruba this March. 10 days of kiting and 9 nights of luxury accommodation and professional cuisine on a 60' catamaran. And a Best pro onboard for personal instruction! More details can be found at www.kiteadventures.com.

Image

And because The BEST Odyssey's itinerary
includes some of the most remote locations on the globe in search of waves and wind, Ozone Travel
is now their in-house agent to provide all the logistical details of getting to and from the yacht; including visas, hotels and other needed arrangements. "I am really excited to be working with Gavin, the Best Odyssey team and all of the owners and guests traveling on this incredible journey. I look forward to drawing from both my kiteboarding and travel experiences to provide the best logistics information and solutions. The only thing better would be, of course, being on the yacht myself!", says Karen Beber Futernick, owner of Ozone Travel.

Image

As The BEST Odyssey is selling out at an unprecedented rate, so looms the launch of the yacht this November in the Caribbean. And from there? A season in the South Pacific, then Micronesia, Australasia, Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and beyond. Check it out.

Move to Fiji for Island Odyssey

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Kiteblogs.com: "Event Location Change For Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey
July 12th, 2006

The Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey just got even more adventurous – with a move from New Caledonia to the friendly islands of Kadavu in Fiji, October 15th - 23rd 2006.
This decision has made the event cheaper and therefore within reach of more recreational riders (with money going directly into the local community), and allowed a more complete experience with the unbelievably welcoming villagers of stunning Fiji.
Organised by three times PKRA world champion Cindy Mosey, the Odyssey is an all-girl adventure combining kiteboarding, learning, friendship, island exploration and a world record attempt by the best professional women kiteboarders alive today.

Mosey said the shift followed her desire to get closer to the people of the pacific islands and give something back through the event.

“New Caledonia would have been a good event, but not an amazing one,” says Mosey. “Those that know me will realise I don’t do anything by halves, so a good event is not good enough. I wanted this event to be a truly amazing experience for everyone involved and that’s why I decided to move it to Fiji.”

Odyssey guests will stay at Kenia resort on Kadavu Island. There will be two chefs from New Zealand making western food, plus four local cooks cooking Fijian dishes.

Accommodation will be in beachfront bures after full days spent kiteboarding, competing, snorkelling with turtles in the nearby marine reserve, hiking to the spectacular Kadavu waterfall, time with local villagers and more. Coaching clinics by professional kite girls are available to all recreational riders free of charge.

Information on the event is online at www.cindymoseyislandodyssey.com . There is an early bird prize draw if registered before July 15.

Kiteblogs.com » Blog Archive » Kite Adventures KitescApe to Sardinia: "Kite Adventures KitescApe to Sardinia"

Just a taste: definitely check out the full article:

"I was extremely lucky to visit Sardinia, both for fun and work. Upon arrival to Cagliari, the southern most tip of Sardinia (see map below) we were greeted by our Italian friend, Stefano who lived across from us in Brazil. While in Brazil, he had mentioned to us how amazing Sardinia was for kiting and also for the beautiful regions that make up this island off the coast of Italy. He had recently moved to Sardinia to work at Hyper Island Kiteboarding School. We immediately checked into our villa atop Torre de Chia, which is about 75 km south of Cagliari. The southern part of Sardinia has around 280-300 windy days a year. That’s for some good kiting! Fortunately, it was windy every single day we were there and depending on the direction it was blowing, there was always somewhere to chase the wind on the island."

Press Release - Gay Kite Surfers to Double by 2008 According to AKSA

Thursday, June 15, 2006

Press Release - Gay Kite Surfers to Double by 2008 According to AKSA: "Gay Kite Surfers to Double by 2008 According to AKSA"

ithin two years, according to research commissioned by AKSA, the newly formed American Kite Surfing Association, 12% of the sport will be enjoyed by gays and lesbians.

In the largest survey of extreme sports enthusiasts ever conducted, TR Cutler, Inc., revealed that members of the community are increasingly interested in kite surfing. This demographic trend follows the trend established in water surfing nearly forty years ago.

Several of the manufacturers are behind the curve of this trend and are just starting to recognize the gay extreme sports market.

2006 2008

Orientation
Gay 6% 12%
Straight 94% 88%

Logan Long, President and Co-founder of the AKSA said, "This organization is about inclusion. Many of the old-timers in the sport are arrogant and try to exclude the efforts of new participants. AKSA is about welcoming everyone to the sport of kite surfing regardless of experience level, race, ethnicity, gender, or orientation. We believe kite surfing is a great sport for anyone who loves thrills and adventure."

American Kite Surfing Association (AKSA) is the leading organization for kite surfers in North America. Founded in 2006 by two extreme sport enthusiasts, membership is anticipated to exceed 30,000 before the end of the year. The purpose of the enterprise is to bring heightened awareness to this fast-growing, dynamic, and fun sport. A vast array of information, products, and techniques are available to the visitors of the AKSA website, www.kite-surfingusa.com. After more than a decade of popularity through Europe and Australia, active North American extreme sport athletes are recognizing the maximum adrenaline rush through kite surfing.

This dramatic interest in the athletically demanding sport has given AKSA founders encouragement about the value of their newly founded organization. AKSA will select 50 leading industry product manufacturers to highlight and profile throughout an extensive national media outreach campaign.
