ASnews PODCAST #76" Shaper Dereck CamachoFriday, May 25, 2007![]() ASnews PODCAST #76! Asnews Interviews Board Shaper Dereck Camacho Dereck Camacho was born in Trinidad, grew up and Singapore and Hawaii, and lived in Antigua and Barbados before finally settling down in Florida. He is the founder of Kitescoop.com and started shaping surf and windsurf boards in college. He got hooked on kiting after seeing Dre and the rest of the local Antigua crew having a blast in wind conditions he couldn’t even go out in with his windsurfing gear. Dereck started shaping kiteboards about five years ago as he was too cheap to buy a production board to learn on when he didn’t even know what kind of board he needed. Today, Dereck owns DC Custom Boards which offers custom kite, wind and surf boards. He caters to riders that want a little bit extra out of their equipment, focusing on details that stoke one rider at a time. He has also been working with Paul Menta of The Kite House and Kent Marinkovic of Adventures Sports (Neilpryde, Cabrinha) on new course and speed racing shapes and designs to help give them a competitive edge. Got a question for Dereck about board shapes and what works best for flat water, choppy conditions, wave riding or course racing? New Underground FootstrapsMonday, May 21, 2007![]() Underground Kiteboards are stoked to release their completely re-designed footstrap and footpad system, which we believe are a massive step forward. The totally integrated footpad and strap is the result of a complete re-think of the traditional foot to board connection. Director Adrian Roper: “We studied all the footstrap solutions on the market, looked at their shortcomings, then started from scratch to produce a fresh system designed for today’s riders”. ![]() The process took 8 months and the resulting product offers versatility, increased comfort, safety and support, superior impact absorption, ‘hoof-proof’ strength and above all good looks. Underground’s unique thermoformed footpad is a pleasure to stand on and the shark skin surface texture provides superior grip with a raised toe bar and ergonomic heel arch. The shape of the footstrap has been refined and the double neoprene construction offers a top layer of comfort with a solid feel. Standard Velcro adjusters allow a custom fit. ![]() The real beauty of the integrated system is in the retainers which fasten the strap’s stainless steel D rings through the pad at 90 degrees to the board. Made from injection molded plastic with stainless steel inserts the retainers offer width micro-adjustment and multiple stance positions even on boards with only two inserts per foot. These are easily screwed down using a Phillips driver and once attached, there are no sharp edges anywhere in the system to catch the rider’s feet. Most riders will slip straight into the standard size strap, however small and large strap sizes are available on request to suit those with smaller or larger than average feet or boots. Watch for these slick new footstrap / pad packs shipping with the latest Underground boards, together with improved grab handles and the popular board rail grab bars. All accessories can be ordered through your Underground dealer as separate items for retro-fitting to your favorite board. Labels: board Fin-tastic new steering system from "Shredda"Tuesday, March 06, 2007![]() This new advanced steering system has been designed to propel the worldwide water-craft industry into the 21st Century and beyond, by means of a quick fitting system, enhanced speed and sleek performance for surfboards. This concept is an alternative to today’s tedious and time consuming process of board manufacturing. Shredda Advanced Steering Systems inspiration was to come up with a better and easier way of finishing off surfboards and to strive in making the surfing industry safer for all surfers while staying focused on the environment’s needs. While developing the Shredda we drew upon the specifications of Jet fighters, the speed they travel at, and their sleek performance cutting through the air. We applied that criteria to then trying to eliminate the drag that surfboard fins produce. Shredda have been working on this new design for 3 years to produce a dynamic product and to enhance the performance of surfboards.By designing our own fitting system for the Shredda, we have now advanced the way we finish off our surfboards and have eliminated the excessive attention required in attaching conventional fin systems in surfboard manufacturing today. This Engineer Designed product can be fitted to any old surfboard with a removable fin system, or new surfboards. Our system results in a substantially lighter surfboard. By following the fitting instructions and using the template supplied, you will ensure that your Shredda is fitted to your board for optimum performance.Being environmentally conscious and wanting to reduce environmental waste we then inquired about using recycled materials in our product. With further research, development and technology, we now use Polypropylene (100% recycled material) in the manufacturing of our Shredda Pro 1 & Pro 2. We have manufactured this product to be affordable to all surfers by keeping the price under $100 Retail and making it available at all surf shops and board manufacturers. For all surf shop owners and board manufacturers please Email us at sales@shredda.comShredda Advanced Steering Systems Pty Ltd, have an Innovation Patent and International Patents (PCT Application lodged). The trademark office has also accepted our Trademark Application No. 909211 in relation to our logo. This will ensure a quality product being manufactured and produced in Australia, by Australians. We have assembled a professional team of Lawyers and Attorneys to protect Shredda Advanced Steering System, IP rights and Trade mark from unauthorized use and production of inferior products. With continual research and development, our focus is to enhance the performance in all water sports and activities while staying focused on the surfing way of life. Prodigy comes with our custom cut, moderate density footpad and widebody adjustable footstraps, four G10 fins (50mm), and a handle. Imperial (performance freestyle/freeride) ![]() Sizes: 123x36 / 128x37 / 133x38 / 138x39 The Cabrinha Imperial is a board that likes to be ridden hard and fast. The outline, which is narrower than our Custom model, is made to handle high speeds through rough or choppy water. For freestyle or freeriding, you’ll have the confidence to take off or land your trick anywhere... in control. With a size range of 123cm all the way up to 138cm, there is a board in the range to fit riders of all sizes. The imperial is also built with an ABS sidewall construction and PVC core. A biax/quadrax glass lay-up provides a forgiving flex and comfortable ride. The Imperial comes standard with multi-density footpads, Wide-body adjustable footstraps, handle, and four G-10 fins (50mm). Custom (wakestyle/freeride) ![]() Sizes: 128x38 / 133x39 / 138x41.5 The Custom model retains its dedicated Wakestyle/Freeride design elements. The Custom is a performance model with excellent pop. It is the board of choice for riders like Andre Phillip. Its wider plan-form and progressive rocker give the board a solid feel for Wakestyle riding. This entirely new construction technique features an ABS sidewall, a PVC core, and mixed weight quadraxial glass to keep the durability high and the weights low. The new Custom comes standard with multi-density footpads, Wide-body adjustable footstraps, handle, and four G-10 fins (50mm). Board Accessories Kitesurf Worlds Team Cup 2006Kitesurf Worlds Team Cup 2006 Be sure to start planning your travel and to register now for an exciting new competition, brought to you by the The Gest Group and the Professional Kite Riders Association (PKRA), scheduled to piggy back on the end of the World Tour this year. The first annual 2006 Kitesurf Worlds Team Cup is set for October 4th through the 8th in Fleixeiras, Brazil, just north of Taiba. The competition format is designed to consist of teams of three riders participating in three separate disciplines that encompass all aspects of kiteboarding competition: course racing, best trick performance and waveriding. Teams will be grouped by kite brand, and are required to have two males, one at least 21 years or older, and one female rider. Currently, 16 teams are allotted to enter, all squaring off for $20,000 in prize money, with $10,000 distributed for first place, $7,000 for second, and $3000 for third. Cost of entry is $150 USD per team, and the competition is filling up fast, so for complete information and to register, go to: www.ktwc.info The first discipline of the 2006 Kitesurf Worlds Team Cup will consist of a day of course racing with the total number of riders from each of the teams competing at the same time in multiple rounds. The results will be based on the overall finishes for each of the teams. The next aspect of the Team Cup contest is the best trick competition, which will be subdivided into three separate categories. Each of the team members will be allowed to compete in one of the three best tricks categories, but not all. The first category will pit one rider from each team against each other trying to perform the most difficult and well executed progressive freestyle trick. The next section of the best trick contest will be the best "old school" trick, where the second rider from each team will try to perform the most difficult and well executed old school trick, including everything from multiple back and front rolls, to board offs and one foot jumps. Kiteloops and handlepasses will not be allowed and are the only tricks not considered old school. The third rider from each team will try to perform the last section of the best trick competition, the most difficult and well executed kiteloop trick, with no handlepasses allowed, however blind landings and roll variations are permitted. Judging for each section of the best trick competition will be based on a 0 to 10 grading system to score the riders, 10 being the best, most difficult, and well executed trick. The final discipline of the Team Cup will be the wave riding bump and jump competition. Only surfboard-style boards are permitted in this format. Riders from each team will be scored solely on wave riding, aerials, backside slashes, and jumps. All riders from each team are allowed to compete, but only the best result from each team will be used for the overall team competition ranking. The judging will be weighted 30% for both the course racing and wave riding disciplines, and 40% for the best trick competition towards the final event standings. Overall, the 2006 Kiteboarding International Team Cup, set for October 4th - 8th, is shaping up to be an exhilarating event. The goal of the competition is to bring together the best pro and kite brand team riders to compete in the ultimate all around team competition challenge. Already, two-time World Champion, Aaron Hadlow (UK), along with seasoned veteran, Mark Shinn (UK) and Caroline Freitas (Brazil) will make up one team for Flexifoil. Those entered will fight for not just the title and bragging rights of "#1 Kiteboarding Team in the World", but of course for the substantial reward of $20,000 dollars in prize money as well. Airush Hammer '07
Really popular in the OZ the original board came from the French Airush rider Julian Sudrat who used this shape as his stock twin tip. It's a Wave riding twin that has one main difference - it's really allround and is increadibly comfortable in really rough chppy conditions. The board has thick mid rails much like a surfboard; plenty of carving grip.. Flip tips to stop you going over the front when you come back down the wave.. thin tips and fairly large centrally placed fins for carving stability and maintain a surfing outline, flex in the tip sections of the board for control and qhite a reasonable volume considering the ultra flat TT's we are used to seeing today. Don't be put off by the shape of these boards - they are very good - conventional is not always right! ![]() Product Overview • Developed from a traditional twintip and worked to enhance the wave riding capabilities radically without loosing the ease of use. • Originally conceived to be a dedicated wave riding twintip the Hammer also proved to be a huge stand out in very choppy conditions. • Due to the popularity of this board a new 144 size has been introduced for heavier riders and lighter winds. Code; Model; Sizes; AB07HA138 Hammer 138 138cm x 38.5cm AB07HA144 Hammer 144 144cm x 42cm Target User Rider who still wants twin tip versatility but rides in waves. Rider who kites in extremely choppy and rough conditions, or prefers a slightly longer board. Rails Tucked Surf Rails through the center of the board to allow a positive driving bottom turn. A hard edge through the last 1⁄4 of the board to keep speed and bite when coming off the top. Rocker Three stage “Wave” rocker with slightly increased rocker in the tip area for clearance and increased turning. Tip Shape and Flex A narrower tail with more curve in the rear section of the outline, combined with reduced thickness and increased flfl ex in the tail. The result is maximum snap when coming off the top. Bottom shape Double V Concave into spiral V – This bottom shape was developed with two outcomes in mind. Firstly to enhance the directional stability of the board without the need for massive fifi ns and secondly to give a positive drive when rolling the board over from the heel edge to the toe edge when initiating a turn. Overall Planform Compared to a medium size freestyle board the Hammer has increased water line length and a slightly narrower width to enhance stability on the wave Fins The Code fin provides maximum grip for waveriding and is designed to limit the front catching. Construction ![]() X-link LT Construction Our premium construction illustrating perfect flfl ex and a bombproof construction with our X-Link PVC core. Boards featuring our X-Link Lt construction use a combination of the high density core with unidirectional and biaxial cloth, together with wood reinforcing in the high impact heel areas. A full top and bottom rail wrap allows for a soft hand shaped rail ensuring the board is more forgiving and stable to ride. A top sheet layer on the bottom deck enhances the durability without limiting the flex characteristics. Takoon SurfboardMonday, September 04, 2006Takoon SurfboardIf you dream of a surfers ride, Takoon now offers you a new, truly surf oriented board to for fill that dream. The target was to create a board that allows easy riding in all conditions.
Red Bull Kitepunks, kickers and sliders and dutch folk, oh my.Thursday, August 03, 2006The birth or a new kiteboard discipline. Out with the old, in with the new. De Bilt, July 27 2006 – Following the credo “We’ve seen enough Hawaiian floral patterns in kiteboarding” Ruben Lenten, winner of the 2005 King of the Air, and Red Bull are throwing a unique kiteboard competition. From August 7th till 11th the eastern part of the IJsselmeer lake in the Netherlands will be host to Red Bull Kite Punks.
With only two rideable obstacles in Venezuela, Ruben hooked up with his sponsor Red Bull to see if this could be taken to a higher level. Ruben started sketching and designing some ideas for obstacles and in co-operation with a specialized builder of skate parks they developed a series of floating obstacles that, once put together look like someone has flooded a super-sized skate park. There is no better way to see if your new idea is a good one than to test it on some eager crash test dummies, all under the guise of a little competition. Red Bull Kite Punks was born. Ruben has rounded up an impressive shortlist of some of the biggest names in new-school kiteboarding for a big session! Or, as Ruben put it: “Bring a helmet, ‘cause if anyone is going home without a black eye or some bruised ribs, they haven’t been charging hard enough.” Confirmed riders include Aaron Hadlow (UK), Leeshai Miller (ISR), Janek Korycki (POL), Rui Meira (ESP), Nick Jacobsen (DEN), Troels Engholm (DEN), Youri Zoon (NED), Greg Thijsse (RSA), Neal Hiler (UK), Petr Thyuskivich (RUS) and Ruben himself of course. The wind window for Red Bull Kite Punks is from August 7th till 11th on one of five spots (Minster Klif, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Cornwederzand) on the Eastern shore of the IJsselmeer lake in the Netherlands. The final location will be chosen based on wind direction and wind force and disclosed on the day of the competition. I got all excited to learn that a German fellow named Dirk Gion has gathered up a mountain board and some kitesurfing gear and taken to windskating across Austraila. I’ve always thought that the wind was an underutilized source of power. I’ve raced sailboats since high school, and I’m aware of certain iceboats exceeding 75mph and more than 10X wind speed, but I have to admit to being surprised that Dirk has managed to exceed 30mph powered only by a kite. Aparently he has been pulled over by the police a couple of times, but had no real problems with them. I’m sure this has just been out of curiosity for the most part. I mean, I would pull him over if I was a cop just to pick his brain. I can only imagine, however, that if he was doing this in the US, the oil lobby would have had their neo-conservative buddies pass some kind of law against it, and poor Dirk would be sitting in prison now. Anti-authroity mentality aside, however, you just have to admire a guy who tackles a 3000 + kilometer journey with only a skateboard and a kite, and it’s not like this is his only ambitious journey. At 19 he crossed Germany and France on horseback, and he has managed some pretty impressive rock climbing accomplishments as well. New North Boards...with Grav-D1 footie strapsSunday, July 23, 2006North's 3 new boards (Cesar Pro 07, Sky Pro 07, Phantom 07) and footgear below: CESAR PRO 07 New School Board Size: 132cm x 40cm Weight. 2,3kg New school, good upwind performance, easy landing for powerful tricks, excellent tailgrip and good pop, hard flex. After the long awaited arrival of The Cesar Pro Model, it’s finally here! The Cesar emerges as a new school competition board designed to push the limits of freestyle performance and accommodate Cesar’s powerful riding style. The flat rocker and straight outline deliver maximum speed, grip and upwind performance. Stiff flex and wide tips create explosive pop for fast, precise take-offs and hot bounce-free landings for the most powered tricks. The tip wingers make the Cesar easy to control even in the strongest wind conditions. The Cesar is truly a no-compromise, total-performance freestyle board aimed at powerful, aggressive riders. ![]() ![]() SKY PRO 07 New School Board Size: 136cm x 41cm Weight: 2,5kg Excellent upwind performance, good tailgrip and easy landings, performance for the heavier ones, hard flex. Introducing the Sky Pro Model for 2007. Already two years in the making, the Sky Pro raises the bar of performance, comfort and style. “I use my board in almost every condition with anything from a 5M kite all the way up to 20M! It’s an awesome board for bigger riders, light wind or any rider wanting more surface area for hard fast landings. It flies upwind and has insane pop for powered tricks. The whole secret to this board’s wide range is in the tip design. The tip allows the tail of the board to sit deep in the water giving it excellent upwind drive while at the same time reducing splash on the riderfrom the opposite tip and creating a super smooth ride. The wide stance setting lowers the riders center of gravity for hard, fast landings.” ![]() ![]() PHANTOM 07 Lightwind Board Speed Crossing Board Sizes: Lightwind Cruiser 149cm x 43cm Speed Crossing Board 138cm x 37cm Incredible Upwind performance (inverted outline), early planing even in the lightest winds, reduced toeside area for best control, hard flex. PHANTOM M The Phantom M is the benchmark for early planing, rapid acceleration and perfect upwind performance. Due to its gentle sidecut, this early planing machine is able to sail upwind at a windspeed of only 9 knots. With a width of 43 cm, the board starts planing in the slightest breeze, yet remains very controllable at higher wind speeds due to the wide stance that was shifted closer to the edge. If you live in a light wind area, the Phantom is the perfect second board in your quiver that allows you to have fun when others are beached and bored. PAHNTOM LW Here we are with a completely new board concept. Effortless planing, easy upwind, incredible speed and best control, all comes together in one new and exciting board design. You can call it the Ferrari of the Kiteboards. This might be the most efficient board shape you have ever tried to kitesuf with. The parabolic and long outline on the heel side will give you the longest possible rail in the water, perfect for going upwind. The specially designed bottom shape will increase that lift. The rounded outline on you toe side will reduce wetted surface and provide better control in conjunction with the cut outs on the tips. You have never experienced going upwind so efficient than on this board. You hardly have to use your body weight to keep the rail under control. Upwind like on Autopilot. Fast and furious but a lot of fun. ![]() ![]() MULTI ADJUSTABLE FOOTSTRAP 07 FOOTPADPLATE 07 Variable strap positions and widths with just one strap Plug and screw, fast setup Easy to adjust for different sizes The new Multi Adjustable Footstrap developed by North Kiteboarding has many new features and advantages over last year’s model: This footstrap adds a whole new dimension. It not only permits adjusting size and asymmetry but also width. Once fitted to the width and shape of the foot it can be adjusted as usual in size (with or without a shoe). Because of the new insert position, the load transfer goes directly from your feet into the board, much like the technology incorporated by snowboard bindings, to give you a closer feel to the board. The webbing of the strap wraps completely around your foot and pad, offering the cleanest looking, most comfortable fit possible.
Liqud Force Launches the MisssionWednesday, June 28, 2006Liquid Force Kiteboarding Releases The Mission Slezak and Redmond Collaborate on Design by Kevin Kline, Liquid Force June 28th, 2006 Liquidforcekites.com - New to the solid LF board line for 2006 is the Mission. Jason Slezak and Jimmy Redmond have collaborated on a new shape that has Jason's skate style of riding in mind. The main focus of this design was to build a board that would be quick to get up to speed and also offer massive pop and edge control. This continuous rocker design features a clean single concave in the middle to a double concave out the ends with subtle channels on the rails. Construction: Compression molded - Milled PVC foam core - PBT top and bottom Design Features: Exclusive LF PVC Supercore: This LF exclusive material has the highest strength to weight ratio available in foam. This milled PVC foam will not take on water like some cheaper foams or balsa cores. Blunted bat wing diamond tail: Gives the board extra lift through the tail that promotes early planning and un-paralleled pop off the water. Rounded variable rails: The Mission has a softer more forgiving rail profile in the middle of the board that becomes progressively thinner and harder toward the ends. Single to Double concave: This feature gives this board the fastest water flow available allowing the board to keep moving in the lulls and have much softer landings. Continuous rocker hull: Makes this board fast and forgiving with smooth pop. The 4th hole: An added insert has been place to the outside insert pack to give the rider the option of the widest stance with Union bindings. Overcast skies were ominous in the morning, however, the bad weather held off until mid day when there was about an hour postponement in the competition to let the first of several squalls pass. The wind was even better than the first day, in the morning averaging from 18-20 knots, fluctuating somewhat with the rain storms, and becoming very strong for the afternoon heats, hitting as much as 25 knots before the event was called for the day due to the foul weather. Conditions were pretty extreme with waves reaching 4-6 feet as the day wore on. The strong downwind current, the choppy shorebreak and the changing tide also wreaked havoc on riders trying to land smoothly and perform tricks close to the beach. The first competitors took to the water at 10:30 am and the riders seemed to take the first round to warm up. Local Portuguese riders gave a good effort but were no match to the seasoned regulars on tour. Leshai Miller (Naish, Israel) won the award for the most powerful kiting of the day nailing the best back mobe, and going huge on every move, however, he wasn't able to land many of his tricks which held him back. Jan Korycki (Naish, Poland) was fired up, advancing three rounds displaying solid, powerful riding including a sweet Pete Rose, big kiteloops and back mobes, before being halted by Rui Meira (Naish, Portugal) in the fourth. Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha), the recent Italian champion, was also on fire passing to the third round with some nice kiteloop slims and blindjudges, to the thrill of his family cheering him on the beach. Youri Zoon (Slingshot, Netherlands) ended Rondina's charge with some bold kiting, firing off a blind judge 3 and an arsenal of handlepass moves. Youri's big, fast, fluid style with the kite at extreme angles is reminiscent of Ruben Lenten (still missing in action due to an ankle injury) and keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats. Cesar Portas (North, Spain) ended Youri's run in the fourth round with a close 2-1 judge's vote. Youri had the kite lower, firing off the same moves, such as a raley 3, mobe, slim, and KGB, however, Cesar was a bit more technical landing the higher scored switch KGB and back mobe to blind. Cesar, struggled in the next round against fellow North teammate, Mallory De la Villemarque (France), breaking his board and not landing many tricks, overpowered with the oncoming storm's higher winds. Mallory nailed a switch mobe and switch aerial back to blind, keeping his kite lower and more powered, securing the win, commenting afterwards he had fun but sometimes felt like he was caught in a washing machine when crashing in the waves. Madison Van Heurck (Naish, USVI), the youngest and smallest male on tour braved the elements, often getting lost behind the waves pulling huge moves, rattling off a full arsenal of handle pass tricks, advancing to the fourth round before losing his kite in the waves and shorewash against Mallory. Guilly Brandão (RRD, Brazil) also had a nice comeback charge in the doubles. His smooth, flowing riding style with good combination moves helped him advance to the fourth round before he was halted by Mikael Blomvall (JN Kites, Sweden). Mikael Blomvall had an epic day, his best ever on the PKRA tour, even having to borrow kites along the way to the finals. After Guilly, Mikael took on Rui Meira in a close heat. Rui ripped, hitting a big kiteloop handlepass (L3) and back mobe but carried his kite higher and missed most of his landings in the waves. The nailbiting action continued against Mallory, who had a slick nosegrab slim but also carried less variety and power. And in the final men's heat of the day, Mikael battled it out with Etienne Lhote (F-One France). Etienne came out with a bang, blasting off a wave for a big air jump and getting the crowd cheering with a wave. Mikael, by this time tired and running out of energy, was still able to execute his textbook perfect KGB, slim, mobe and switch mobe, however lost a lot of time when he was ripped out of his board near the end of the heat. Etienne was not able to capitalize though, breaking his board going for a huge L3, coming in to switch it out but never managing to wrack up any more strong moves. Tomorrow Mikael will continue his charge for the winner's podium, knowing he has at least secured 4th place overall. The stand out of the day for the women was Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland). Ania was on fire, first charging past Laima Baradaite (Cabrinha, Lithuania) then Angela Peral (North, Spain), who got lost in the waves and struggled to land her tricks. She went on to meet up with Katja Roose (Airrush, Netherlands), who was also having a strong day, having bested Jalou Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) in a close heat just prior, both with their families cheering them on from the beach. Unfortunately, Katja's lines were tangled from the mid day storm that even blew parts of the judge's tower away, and she had to switch bars, not knowing that the replacement was the wrong size causing her kite to crash due to no power and ending her winning run. Ania seized the opportunity to continue her charge for the winner's podium taking on Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil) next. They seemed to match trick for trick, but in a close 3-2 judge's vote, Ania edged out the victory, displaying more moves on both tacks and riding with a ton of confidence and power. The day ended with Ania winning the quarterfinals against Karolina Winkoloska (Naish, Poland), who was seemingly washed downwind and unable to perform in the choppy water, before more rain brought the action to a halt until tomorrow. Tonight the party is at the XL bar starting at 10 pm in the town of Alvor. There should be a good turn out as most of the riders are finished the freestyle main event. For those who want to continue into the wee hours, the Katedral Disco is open every night from 2 am. The skippers meeting at 10 am, with first possible start at 10:30 am. He saved the life of a 34 year kitesurfer from Aix en Provence, from the cold water of the Berre Lake. Jean-Yves Derieu, pilot of the waterbomber, says: 'We were coming back, with three planes, from a fire in the Gard region. Before landing to the Marignane airstrip, we were advised by radio that the boat from the sea rescue team was looking for a body in the lake, after a torn apart kite was identified without anybody around. An helicopter was already there. Our three planes did a detour to the lake. At this time, there was a 40 knots gusty wind. The pilot flought along the eastern and northern boundary of the rough lake when Jean Yves' copilot see an arm agitating. 'The victim had a black harness, thus we could not see him much in the very dark water. I decided to water land in the waves. The copilot noticed that we were about 200 m from the shipwrecked person. The two other Canadairs guided me from the air. I piloted the plane as I would have steamed a vessel during a 'man overboard' procedure, and my copilot managed to get the victim on board by the rear door. Happy but exhausted and in hypothermic state after three hours into the water, the victim is flought to the emergency centre of the airstrip. There, the sportman received medication and got recomfort by dining with the firemen. 'He was very happy, speaking a lot, explaining that he could not believe that the Canadairs were there for him. Labels: board Replace Your Board LeashSunday, June 04, 2006![]() Go_Joe | Ocean Rodeo: "What is it? Here's the press release for an interesting idea. An inflatable mini sail for your board to help it get sent downwind, keeping you from frustrating body drag time. Seems like an interesting idea, unless you miss the board and watch it breeze on by you while you fiddle with your kite. This seems much more of a wait-and-see than a must have accessory: The GO – Joe™ is an inflatable tube structure attached to deck of the kiteboard that uses the natural forces of buoyancy distribution and wind to roll you kite board right side up and accelerate it down wind. These features combined with high visibility and additional floatation will make the use of surfboard style leashes in kiteboarding obsolete." Design details: 1. The unique hour glass design of the inflatable tube structure places the self righting buoyancy at a high pivot point. This distribution of flotation will power roll your board right side up if it lands foot straps down in the water, (foot straps down create drag, slowing the boards drift) 2. With the board right side up and foot strap resistance eliminated, the GO – Joe™ is positioned on the board forward of center allowing the wind to turn and sail the GO – Joe ™ down wind towards the rider. If the rider maintains their position with the kite at the zenith the board will simply sail downwind towards you. 3. The hour glass shaped design of the GO – Joe™ fits comfortably between the riders feet and does not restrict mobility. The hour glass shape also eliminates drag caused by spray from the boards rails 4. The GO – Joe™ is very light and durable using our proven manufacturing techniques. Construction and durability 1. The inflatable tubes are manufactured with the same techniques and materials used on our kite tubes. 110 micron PU inner bladder with HD Nylon outer cover. Bomber! 2. Deck mounting plate uses the same construction as our foot pad deck plates. How to install the GO – Joe™ 1. Simply screw the GO – Joe™ into the grab handle inserts found on any board. Pump-up the GO – Joe™ tube, and you are ready to ride! Deflate the GO Joe™ for easy storage and transport. 2. One size fits all; available in high visibility orange and yellow. The board voted 12-4 Thursday to recommend to city officials to put a ban into effect on most commercial activity at the popular beach. 'I'm all for water sports, but the commercial activity has taken over,' resident Kalana Best said. 'For some people it's paradise found. For the people who live here, it's paradise lost.'" Labels: board Kailua worries about parkThursday, June 01, 2006Kite Park Worries : "Kai Harder typically starts his work day hitching a rental trailer to his truck and heading to Kailua Beach Park. He works for Naish Hawaii renting equipment and instructing wind and kite surfers. But if the Kailua Neighborhood Board gets its way, that won't be the case much longer. It wants the city to ban commercial interests in the park including water sport instructions. Harder says this will ultimately make the water less safe. 'It would become a bigger issue because there would be nobody down here watching them,' he said. 'When people see me down here at the beach, they know they can come and ask me what's right and what's wrong.' Under the board's recommendation, bouncer houses popular with the kids and weddings would also be banned. The snack bar and filming would be the only commercial activities allowed." Kiterelease - Releasable Trim LoopTuesday, May 30, 2006Sports Safety Designs LLC: "Most of the time these accidents occur on or near the beach. The KiteRelease takes the place of an old fashioned spreader bar; what the KiteRelease does is to release the trimloop, separating you from the kite in most dangerous situations. The KiteRelease uses the concept of 'Safety On Demand'. When launching your kite you select 'Launch' mode on the KiteRelease. The KiteRelease will release as trimloop tension approaches rider weight. After you enter the water and put on your board you select either the 'Ride' or 'Locked' mode. The 'Ride' mode allows you to waterstart and cruise normally, while still affording a level of automatic protection. The 'Locked' mode allows full maneuvering and jumping with no restrictions. The 'Manual Release' mode is available at any time and will manually activate the release. There is no need to stop boarding while switching modes, just reach down and move the Selector Lever into the mode you want. This is easily done with one hand, and with just a little bit of experience you should be able to determine the selected mode by feel! The KiteRelease also employs 'Soft Shackle' (Patent Pending) technology. The Soft Shackle greatly eases the process of shackling in and out. simply pull the trimloop into the hook and you're shackled in. Grab the trimloop and pull it down & back and you're out!"
