AsNews Podcast #81: Lake Michigan Kite, and Kite 4 Cancer

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Podcast #81:

Due to the 4th of July, this week’s podcast will be pre-recorded but no less interesting than our live interviews! Joining us this week are Great Lakes waterman Joe Bidawid and co-founder of the Women’s Kiteboarding Association, Tonia Farman. Both have been personally affected by loved ones with Cancer and are spearheading two events this August to raise awareness and funds for this disease which affects over 1.3 million Americans each year (source: 2006 stats, American Cancer Society).

In late August, Joe will attempt a world record across Lake Michigan on his stand up paddle board: a crossing from St. Joe, Michigan to Chicago, Illinois --a distance of 60-80 miles that he expects will take 18-24 continuous hours!

August 25, the event site in Hood River, Oregon, will host the first ever Kiteboarding 4 Cancer Kite Derby where every competitor will walk away with something, including a 2008 Naish quiver for the most money raised and a 2008 Slingshot quiver for the longest distance kited. More businesses and manufacturers are donating daily to help the cause with some early 08 previews and demos happening at the Oregon event.

Tune in to the show for details and the latest on how you can get involved to support these two great events and make a difference! The podcast will be available for download starting this Friday, July 6 on Itunes, www.thekiteboarder.com, www.asnews.net, www.kiteforum.com or your favorite podcast portal website.

Happy 4th of July!

Podcast #80:

Our guest this week is Sander Nauenberg from SurfTech. Based out of Santa Cruz, California, SurfTech is a well-known brand in the surfing world but has been largely under the radar of the mainstream kiteboarding scene until recently. Now, with the introduction of SurfTech’s new TL2 technology, traction pad/footstrap package with built-in insets, and summer demo tour, SurfTech has formally entered the kitesurfing market, prompted by the growing crossover between surfers and kitesurfers.

With over 200 different models to choose from, SurfTech wants to help demystify the choices that kitesurfers have when searching for a directional kiteboard that rips when surfing or kiting. With the motto, “all kitesurfers are not created equal,” Sander is one of your best resources to ask questions to re: what board is right for you when you factor in your skill level, size, style, conditions and personal preference.

Got a question for Sander? Tune in to the live interview this Thursday at 6p PST.

ASnews PODCAST #76!

Asnews Interviews Board Shaper Dereck Camacho

Dereck Camacho was born in Trinidad, grew up and Singapore and Hawaii, and lived in Antigua and Barbados before finally settling down in Florida. He is the founder of Kitescoop.com and started shaping surf and windsurf boards in college. He got hooked on kiting after seeing Dre and the rest of the local Antigua crew having a blast in wind conditions he couldn’t even go out in with his windsurfing gear. Dereck started shaping kiteboards about five years ago as he was too cheap to buy a production board to learn on when he didn’t even know what kind of board he needed.

Today, Dereck owns DC Custom Boards which offers custom kite, wind and surf boards. He caters to riders that want a little bit extra out of their equipment, focusing on details that stoke one rider at a time. He has also been working with Paul Menta of The Kite House and Kent Marinkovic of Adventures Sports (Neilpryde, Cabrinha) on new course and speed racing shapes and designs to help give them a competitive edge. Got a question for Dereck about board shapes and what works best for flat water, choppy conditions, wave riding or course racing? Join the live interview and discussion this Thursday night! •

When: Thursday, May 24, 2007 • Time: 6p PST, 8p Central, 9p EST, super early for Europe! • Where: http://cherrytap.com/lounge.php?l=1293

This week, ASNews.net interviews guests Nico Ostermann and Bruce Johnson, the new US distributors for F.One. F.one was one of the original kiteteboarding companies, founded by French waterman Raphael Salles in 1996. 100% dedicated to kiteboarding, the company has enjoyed good growth and market share in Europe since its inception, especially in its own backyard in France, but has not had much of a presence in the US in the last few years because of an issue with the former distributor (which has since been resolved).

Find out about the challenges that a distributor faces when entering a new market, why the two decided to take the leap of faith with F.one and all about the companies 07 product line, including the much talked about Legend twintip "surfboard" and the new Impact Short Line, a C-kite with 18m lines and full depower safety made specifically for riding unhooked, freestyle or in the surf in strong winds. Got a question for Nico or Bruce about F.one? Tune in to the podcast and ask your questions live!
