Save Shark Bay in South Africa

Wednesday, May 09, 2007

Hi there Shark Bay is under threat and now there is a site providing information for those who are not quite sure of what is going on.

The articles in the press have not told the true story and if you check, you will note that a "staff" writer produced the Cape Time article...... phone thm and ask why this is the case. The developers are saying all the right things to many people, yet their development is a direct threat to the kiting community. This development may reduce or end access, endanger kiters and provide dangerous structures for those unfortuate enough to be dragged up the beach.

The entire West Coast is slowly having beach access restricted by booms, fences, walls and more and shark bay is used by 100's of eople each week. Check out www.savesharkbay.org and object to the Scoping Report by the 15th of May. The entire project is flying in the face of the Provincial and Local Spatial Framework and is trying to provide further Urban Sprawl to the detriment of the National Park. Once this one gets through, the Lagoon may be awash of yet more Tuscan developments...... this is not the only private land within the boundaries of the National Park. This has been prevented before, we need now to ensure that it NEVER happens. Cheers www.savesharkbay.org

Look out for the Rip Tides

Monday, March 12, 2007

Even kitesurfers need an assist from the barrel-chested hasselhof warriors every once in a while

"Two kite-boarders were rescued after being swept out to sea by strong rip-currents at Port Alfred at the weekend and, in separate incidents, a man nearly drowned and a search was conducted for a boat in distress at False Bay.The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted early on Sunday following reports of a kite-boarder being swept out to sea at West Beach, Port Alfred. A second man, who had swum out to assist the kite-boarder, had also struggled in the surf."

Kiteworld 23 Out Now

Monday, September 11, 2006

August hit and suddenly the conditions we’ve been tearing our hair out for started rolling in. No doubt, September even more so marks the changing of the weather guard and brings with it a sense of optimism and excitement for the next few months.

We mark this change in mood and temperature with stories from the extremes to whet your appetite for all the riding opportunities coming up. Sticking initially with the warm thoughts, issue 23 sees our build up to the ever more popular season in South Africa that begins in November. Riders from all around Europe take advantage of a commanding exchange rate and head south to dine on the pleasure served up by the majestic beaches, punchy, menacing winds and magnificent waves found around its picturesque shores. We experience two very different cities in a two part feature on the most wind-swept and hazardous stretches of coastline in the world, and reveal the spots to look out for in a wind-charged country that provided 40 consecutive windy days earlier this year.

Iceland may not be the first place you think of when booking your summer holiday, but if you’re in the mood for a very different experience that’s only a short plane ride away, or are just in need of a snowkite fix, we have just the ticket.

And in terms of wild travel and experiences, we couldn’t very well look past Scotland. However, this time, getting the experience were a couple of French blokes who gave us their take on our northerly neighbour as they stoked the auld alliance.

Also this issue, we take a look at some of the shapes and trends apparent in the new kit that will be lining your local shop’s shelves in 2007, and we continue in our quest to get you tooled up in terms of your riding skills with more in depth technique articles.

All this, and of course much, much more.

Kiteboarders meet with NSRI - iKiteboarding.com

Kiteboarders meet with NSRI - iKiteboarding.com: "Kiteboarders meet with NSRI

More information about how to prevent excessive search and rescue efforts after the jump:

Following a recent article in a local newspaper that highlighted unnecessary sea rescues in South Africa, ikiteboarding.com organised a meeting with the NSRI.

We met at the Melkbosstrand NSRI station on Friday 2 June 2006. Several kiteboarders were present along with the NSRI station crew.

Various ideas from the recent thread on the forums were mentioned, including the use of flairs and a Kiteboarders Alert Network (KAN).

There is no easy solution to the problem of unnecessary NSRI callouts. There is however a few things that kiteboarders can do to help eliminate unnecessary callouts.

Station commander Rhine Barnes explained that every minute counts in emergency situations and it is therefore not always possible to assess the seriousness of a situation when a call comes in from the public. When a call comes in from Port Control, the local crew will respond to the call immediately and receive further updates and information on their way to the incident via dispatch.
